Carol Porter announces lieutenant governor bid

Hehe. This could get interesting.

From Gold Dome Live:

Carol Porter will seek the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, joining her husband, DuBose Porter, as a potential husband and wife team at the top of the party’s ticket.

Carol Porter, who announced her intention at a Capitol news conference with her husband and their boys at her side, becomes the first Democrat to announce for lieutenant governor. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is seeking-relection on the Republican side.

Several weeks ago, Porter spoke on her husband's behalf at a small business forum. The appearance was so well received, people began chattering that she should take a stab at political office.

After the jump, a video of that speech, as well as some speculatin'.

That evening at Manuel's Tavern, Porter and her husband stopped by CL's table to talk with some ne'er-do-wells. Some Gold Dome denizens in attendance that night also encouraged she give Cagle a challenge. She smiled but wouldn't commit.

Now that Porter's in the race, what are the chances she can unseat a popular (though not invincible) Republican incumbent in a red state? Let's do what good journalists and political junkies do and speculate!

If you've ever met Porter, you've probably noticed she's a good campaigner. She's likable, direct, and makes sure to meet everyone in the room. She's able to capture your attention, which will be needed in a race against Cagle, who looks like he fell off the cover of Men's Journal yet very rarely has anything of substance to say. (Something about those eyes, we guess.) And she'll have to start raising money pronto — during a terrible time to ask for cash.

One question: Does this mean Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, a fellow Democrat, won't run for the seat? If not, someone might wanna tell the youngens on the Facebook.
