Council shoots down proposal to move historic African-American cemetery

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Tue, Mar 16, 2010 at 3:37 PM

The Atlanta City Council yesterday shot down a Stone Mountain developer's proposal to relocate Mt. Olive Cemetery — the remnants of what once was Macedonia Park, a historic African-American community in Buckhead.

Brandon Marshall had requested a cemetery disturbance permit to move the remains on the small parcel of land near Frankie Allen Park along Pharr Road. Last December, the Atlanta Urban Design Commission recommended the city deny the permit.

According to a lawsuit filed by Elon Osby, whose grandparents and uncle are buried in the cemetery, Fulton County erred when it began assessing property taxes on the land, which it later auctioned off to Marshall for nearly $60,000.

We've put in a request for comment from Marshall and Osby and will update when we hear back.
