“24” Mid-season Checklist: hostages, bombs, stapler guy from Office Space, Prez Hassan’s hair, faked death!  And we’re a go.

Episode 12 begins with a hostage situation as Tarin drags Kayla from the building, shooting down an entire SWAT team on the way. A pretty good car chase and subsequent car dump in a tunnel follows. Action movies past may have prepared us for this, but I’m still with ‘em! Tarin whisks Kayla to some abandoned underground bank that will now serve as the “terrorist lair.” Jack and Cole head over to the UN to inform the Hassans that their daughter was taken hostage. While they had the building surrounded. Oops.

Quick break over to Dana/Jenny and the probation officer (Milton!). The ever persistent probation officer knows what you are up to Jenny/Dana. And he is going to make you as uncomfortable as possible while he makes you tell him.

Back at the underground hideout, head terrorist, Samir is back and is demanding the elusive File 33 in exchange for Kayla. Here’s where things get momentarily comical. File 33 is a document that happens to contain ALL of the U.S.'s defense protocols against a nuclear attack. And it’s on President Hassan’s laptop. Who has that sitting on their desktop?! Let’s just take a moment and be grateful that the writers of “24” clearly have no problem taking liberties with these things.

While all this File 33 business has been going on, Stephen Root: Probation Officer has been milling around the building and in that short time discovered Dana/Jenny’s connection with the evidence room break in with Dumb and Dumber a few episodes back. Root plays his character well and his ability to make Dana/Jenny squirm with his knowledge of CTU is brilliant.

  • Two guesses as to what is making Hastings run this fast? Turkey sandwich is not the answer.

Kayla, meanwhile, is still tied up and trying to convince Tarin to untie her. Tarin frees Kayla only to be shot in the back and killed. Kayla still manages to grab an escape car and speed off. She is off to CTU!

Ok. So, I hope you are sitting down because things are about to get real.

So, first off, Tarin is not dead. Secondly, this whole hostage thing was a ploy! They knew that President Hassan would never give up File 33. So, why kidnap Kayla, you ask? Well, it turns out that Kayla’s escape car is actually a rigged EMT bomb sent to destroy CTU!  Kayla arrives at CTU just in time for the bomb to explode, destroying all of CTU’s electricity. CTU is blacked out. Now, the only weapon they have left is Jack Bauer.

Standing ovation!
