Transit advocates and Mayor Kasim Reed will gather at downtown's Five Points station on Friday afternoon as part of Ride MARTA Day.

Speakers at the event — which is organized by the City of Atlanta, Citizens for Progressive Transit, ACT Now and Save MARTA — will remind state lawmakers how important the transit service is to metro residents, visitors and the economy. That event kicks off at 3 p.m.

Like many people movers across the country, metro Atlanta's largest transit agency is facing cutbacks and an uncertain future. Without additional funding, MARTA is expected to cut 30 percent of its service — including half of its bus routes.

To help raise awareness about MARTA's woes and show support for the agency, organizers are asking people ride the bus or train at least once during the day.

UPDATED: State Sen. Nan Orrock, D-Atlanta, Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and Amalgamated Transit Union President Benita West have been added to the list of speakers.
