Preview: "We Are Going to Eat You, Too" at MINT Gallery

MINT Gallery in Old Fourth Ward tends to be a haven where irreverence rules the day, and fortunately, it’s rarely at the expense of thoughtful, substantial work. And even when it’s not at all thoughtful or substantial, it’s at least totally enjoyable and earnest. The type of weighty whimsy that the gallery leans toward usually evokes a freeing freshness from exhibiting artists – that feeling of being popped with bright burst of air (that quickly develops into something more layered that viewers can totally bite into and chew on for awhile) is likely the reason why MINT’s shows are consistently well attended.

With recent shows like Here We Hide, a collaboration by the Paper Twins, Joe Tsambiras and Sam Parker, MINT’s rulers have long been proponents of orchestrated collaborations (the aforementioned exhibition team was brought together by MINT’s Mike Germon) and themed group shows. Their newest exhibition, We Are Going to Eat You, Too, is a group show organized by outside curator Eric Weber. A follow up to last year’s We Are Going to Eat You, the exhibition promises to fill MINT’s Sampson Street space once again with artistic homages to cult films.

"I think film is an enormous part of our modern language so it is always exciting and fascinating to see how people interpret these movies and add a new spin to them. I love seeing how an artist can take an idea sparked by a filmmaker - perhaps, a briefly-seen character or a throwaway scene that lasted all of five seconds - and see them identified, redefined and made into something completely new and is truly a compliment to the films and to the people who made them…it becomes sort of the ultimate and most sincere fan letter, " says Weber of his motivation for putting these shows together.

We Are Going to Eat You, Too opens at MINT Gallery this Saturday, April 17 from 8 p.m. - 11 p.m.
