The journey from Atlanta to the Arctic Circle will take Daniel Palazzolo about 25 days, 11,000 miles, through almost a dozen states and several more Canadian provinces and he's doing it all on a motorcycle and, for the most part, alone. The trip will be arduous, no doubt (I can't wrap my mind or butt around 11,000 miles spent perched on a motorcycle seat). But, to Palazzolo's mind it will be no longer, more difficult or lonely than what his sister Kris will face in the coming months in her battle against breast cancer.
On his blog, Palazzolo writes:
I'm riding a motorcycle from Atlanta, GA to the Arctic Circle, AK, because it's hard and long and something I will do alone in honor of my sister, Kris, who has breast cancer. I'm hoping this site gives her something to read during chemo, because that's hard and it takes a long time, and it's something she has to do alone.
A U.S. Forest Service firefighter by trade, Palazzolo recently took a part-time job in Atlanta his hometown so he could spend as much time as possible with his sister, a mother of five, and her family before heading to Alaska on his BMW GS motorcycle on July 25. He'll document his trip by posting pictures and entries on his blog.
Palazzolo hopes to raise $5,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation before departing. According to his donations page, he's raised $790 thus far.
