Rasmussen: Barnes still Dem's best hope in gov's race, but ...

... the former governor still trails all his Republican contenders except Eric Johnson. And according to the polling service, Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker, Barnes' closest competitor in the July 20 Democratic primary, is a "distant second" to the GOP candidates.

From Rasmussen:

Roy Barnes

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Georgia finds Congressman Nathan Deal still running slightly stronger than the other Republicans. Deal earns 47% support to Barnes’ 40%, virtually identical to his 46% to 39% lead a month ago. Against Baker, Deal posts a 47% to 30% lead.

State Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel edge Barnes by nearly identical margins – 43% to 39% and 42% to 39% respectively. [...]

Barnes ran strongest against all the Republicans in March but has been unable to rise above the low 40s in any of the match-ups. Both parties pick their nominees in July 20 primaries.

Keep in mind that Barnes and his competitor fall within the margin of error on a few of these fantasy match-ups. Go check out Rasmussen for more details, including some respondents' thoughts about illegal immigration (sneak peek: a large number think illegal immigrants put a severe strain on the state's budget).

But in other news: Ugh. Even with scandals, campaign commercials and men getting shot by young hunters, the race to become the chief executive of one of the fastest growing states in the country just doesn't feel like it's happening. Even the poll results aren't changing. (This batch of numbers is similar to what Rasmussen reported last month.)

Tom Baxter of Insider Advantage is right. The Georgia gubernatorial race could use a little "sizzle." He points to South Carolina, where a political blogger recently claimed that he'd had an affair with a Republican candidate. Anyone got a better idea?
