A group of about 30 people gathered for a vigil June 9 on the steps of the state Capitol during the scheduled time for the execution of death row inmate Melbert Ray Ford, 49, who was executed this evening by lethal injection in Jackson, Georgia. Ford was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend Martha Chapman Matich and her niece Lisa Chapman, who was eleven years old, in 1986.

The vigil included prayers, songs and a reading of the 46 names of men who have been executed in Georgia since 1983.

"We take a public stand against the state killing in our name, reject this futile and brutalizing excercise in vengeance that makes our communities neither safer nor more whole, " said Sara Totonchi, Chair of Georgians to the Death Penalty, in a press release about the vigil.
