Shutter Island questions continue with DVD release

Posted By on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island was released on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, and will doubtlessly leave a whole new wave of audiences transfixed and/or perplexed. Our Spoiler Questions Now That We've Seen Shutter Island post from Feb. 22 seems to have become the Internet's go-to place for arguing about the implications of Martin Scorsese's twisty noir mystery. Our eager/obsessive commenters have described the symptoms of librium withdrawal, identified anagrams of some of the film's key names and traced the origins of the term "The Rule of Four" to the Supreme Court. Most of the debate hinges on whether Leonardo DiCaprio's character is insane, and some readers provide cogent arguments that he is not. Here are a few choice quotes:

"Does it make any sense at all that a patient in a very remote mental hospital would disappear overnight, and the U.S. government would have two Marshalls on site the NEXT DAY? Are you kidding me?"

"Could the band-aid and scar been evidence of Electro Shock Therapy? Maybe a skin injury from the electrode?"

"Really people. They don't perform lobotomies through the forehead, it goes through the corner of the eye."

"Anyone notice the red and gold ties? All of the psychologists are wearing red ties with gold patterns until the scene in the lighthouse where DiCaprio's character realizes his own identity, the red and gold are reversed and the characters wear gold with red patterns."

"Did anyone else notice the cigarette smoke going backwards? "

"I think there's no good answer for the "insane or not" question. The more you try to decide, the more you can't."

"Well I've seen Shutter Island and I'm having my own flashback .I see in my mind's eye Leonardo Dicaprio at the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge, reading the script for the first time. Like a man with Tourette's Syndrome, he keeps yelling, " Who? What? Where?" Finally his manager walks over and informs him that Scorsese is directing it, so please calm down. The fog clears and the sun comes out. "Where do I sign?" he smiles. That's Hollywood today. Sorry Martin and Leonardo.... it is not a very good movie.
