John R. Briggs has never seen Kiss Me Kate, Cole Porter's musical about a Broadway theater staging Taming of the Shrew with songs and dances. Instead, Briggs' own adaptation of the Shakespeare play, Shrew: The Musical, hews closely to the plot of Shakespeare's original comedy (and much of its dialogue). Briggs and Dennis West composed songs reminiscent of Porter's predecessors and contemporaries like the Gershwins and Johnny Mercer. Shrew: The Musical premiered at Georgia Shakespeare in 1993 and a vibrant remount anchored by the musical chops of Park Krausen and Joe Knezevich has opened the company's 25th anniversary season.
