Atlanta is the 32nd "manliest" city in the U.S., at least according to the results of the second annual "America's Manliest Cities" rankings developed in partnership between the maker of COMBOS snacks and research guru Bert Sperling.
The study evaluated the machismo of the country's 50 major metropolitan areas, taking into account "manly" characteristics like the number of home improvement stores, steak houses, pickup trucks and motorcycles per capita. Other gender stereotypical criteria included the frequency of monster truck rallies, sports TV viewing habits, and, of course, salty-snack sales. Way to be discrete, guys. So, don't fret, Atlanta men; you have an entire year to build up some man points by chowing down on those oh-so-macho cheese-filled pretzels.
The "manly occupation" category was added to the criteria this year "to recognize the hard-working guys that make so many American cities great places to live," Mars, Inc. explained in a press release. Firefighters, police officers, construction workers and EMT personnel were among the jobs deemed only suitable for men.
What city was awarded the title of "most manly" in the U.S.? It's a bit ironic. None other than the Queen City: Charlotte, N.C. Rounding out the top five were Columbus, Ohio; Kansas City, Mo.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Baltimore.
