Do your patriotic duty and go see America tonight at MINT Gallery

Posted By on Sat, Jul 3, 2010 at 1:17 PM

While you're busy getting your grills fired up and your bottle rockets smuggled in from Alabama, take a break and head over to MINT Gallery tonight for a pre-4th dose of Americana. America, a group show curated by Ben Goldman, opens from 7-11 p.m. with food on the grill and enough red, white and blue PBR to make you forget everything you hate about this country - it'll be patriotic revelry at its finest!

From reverence to satire to all out anger, America (which is always said in G.W. Bush's voice in my head. It's funnier that way) runs the gamut of feelings and perspectives on the Patriotic Condition. Collectively, the show emanates the bright festivity of fireworks on the 4th - with little gritty previews of the national hangover we'll all feel come Monday morning. There are even immaculately rendered sloppy burgers and bulbous figures of the, uh, curvy Heartland physique to make you feel guilty for your slovenly, over-indulgent ways this weekend.

Goldman, who recently curated The Blotter Show at Kibbee Gallery, has not only packed MINT's walls with a broad range of artistic takes on American life, politics, and history, but has somehow managed to turn this into a crash course on local art. This would turn into the longest blog post ever if we listed every participating artist and talked about the other awesome shit they're doing. If you know nothing about local art, just go to MINT tonight and assuredly, you'll leave with a few new favorites.

Here's a preview of some of what you'll see:
