New local street art meme?

mask.jpg
As long as street artists possess skill, wit and flair — coupled with an appropriate respect for old buildings — street art, graffiti and even creative tagging can do much to enrich our urban landscape.

I especially appreciate what I call street art memes, recurring images or words placed around town, such as the adorable Mr. Fangs or the inscrutable Evereman.

Another image that's joined the ranks is the stocking-cap guy, which I spotted on this sign at the corner of Boulevard and Ponce over the July 4 weekend. Now, I understand that, unlike Mr. Fangs or the original Andre the Giant, there's a commercial intent behind the stocking cap image, which serves as the logo for a certain local rock band.

But I don't have a problem with that. I tend to feel that good guerrilla marketing — defined loosely as being clever and not too obvious — makes for good street art.

What say you?
