Pay & Sit

Video illustrates downside of making public spaces into private, for-profit spaces

Via Andrew Sullivan, here’s a public art installation imagining a future where sitting on a park bench requires paying money.

PAY & SIT: the private bench (HD) from Fabian Brunsing on Vimeo.

Sad to say, it reminds me of Atlantic Station - where a security guard recently told me I was not permitted to sit inside my car while parked at a paid parking meter outside a store. I wanted to wait inside my car while my wife ran inside to return something, I had to park in the underground deck or drive in circles. The streets in the middle of Atlantic Station are private property. It’s just a mall you can drive through. There’s no point arguing.
