Creative organizations Gather once again this Saturday

Tis the season for Atlanta arts organizations to come together. Back in June, dozens of artists, galleries, and bands rocked Poncey-Highland at Artlantis, and this Saturday, July 31, Gather Atlanta is back with the whole damn crew of Atlanta's young creative organizations—and they've got a lot to talk about.

Within the arts community in Atlanta, the inter-organizational support is strong, with very little annoying "go team" cheeriness or corporate-style team building exercises (although a trust fall would be kinda dope.) What you'll find in place of all that mess is a smart balance where calculated co-dependence allows for each group or individual to bring their greatest strengths to the table for the good of other like-minded organizations, while each retaining its autonomy—Atlanta's young creative entities are down with supporting each other, but they're each distinctly doing their own thing.

That's where Gather Atlanta comes in. Once a year, founding organizations MINT Gallery (who is totally breaking the compound word theme), WonderRoot, BurnAway, and ThoughtMarker host a conference for other young creative organizations ("young" in this case referring to the age of the organizations, not necessarily the people running them. Although they are mostly pretty young, too.) The structure is as simple as it should be: each participating organization sets up a table where they can present information, demonstrations, and (if they know what's up) free gifts. (No one does well at a trade show-style event without freebies. Just sayin'.)

The whole event also serves as a general "checking in" of the arts situation in Atlanta. It's a chance for any interested parties (galleries, media, the general public) to come together to discuss issues relevant to art in Atlanta, as well as an opportunity for art-goers and artists to do a little one-stop shopping if they're interested in getting involved in an arts organization. Something for everyone! Hurray!

This year, the conference is being held at the Trees Atlanta building in Reynoldstown. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with a panel discussion on "Art and the Public Sphere", moderated by BurnAway's Jeremy Abernathy. After that, it's time to get your schmooze on—the rest of the evening is all about perusing the participants' tables, socializing and...ah fuck it, I'm gonna say it...networking.

A list of this year's GATL participants can be found here.
