Four of baseball's most acclaimed scholars—all of whom happen to be female—will be signing copies of their work and meeting with fans on Thursday night inside Charis Books & More—the South's oldest and largest feminist bookstore.
Dorothy Seymour Mills, Christina Kahrl, Judith Testa and Cecilia Tan are all scheduled to appear and will be discussing their baseball writing experiences and the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated profession.
40 years of researching and writing about baseball culminated with Dorothy Seymour Mills' release of A Woman's Work: Writing Baseball History with Harold Seymour (pictured right) in 2004. The book reveals the working relationship Mills shared with her late husband—one of baseball's most revered historians—and how she would become known as the game's first female historian.
Christina Kahrl, a founder of Baseball Prospectus—one of the sport's largest statistical databases—and member of the Baseball Writer's Association of America, has been covering baseball for nearly 20 years. She is widely viewed as one of the most knowledgeable baseball writers around today.
A former Brooklyn Dodger fan, Judith Testa just recently got into the game of baseball writing as she released her first book, Sal Maglie: Baseball's Demon Barber, in 2007.
Before venturing into fiction and nonfiction writing, Cecilia Tan played baseball in the women's hardball leagues of her native New England. Although she now resides in Boston, Tan is a self-proclaimed New York Yankee fan and her book, The 50 Greatest Yankee Games, can prove it.
These four ladies are prime examples of how women are changing the journalistic landscape as the term 'playing with the boys' takes on a whole new meaning. (Apologies to Geena, Rosie and Madonna)
Charis Books & More is located at 1189 Euclid Ave., NE Atlanta. The event is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and should last until 9.
