RGA compares Barnes to Obama in TV ad, calls former gov's term 'disastrous'

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Wed, Aug 18, 2010 at 10:46 AM

The Republican Governors Association has decided to join the other special interest groups that'll heckle from the sidelines during Georgia's gubernatorial race between Nathan Deal and Roy Barnes.

In its first Peach State commercial of the campaign season, the RGA says the Democratic nominee's statewide campaign is an "apology tour" similar to the international visits President Obama conducted when he took office. The ad — which calls Barnes' four-year term in the governor's office "disastrous" — launched today and will air throughout the state.

The organization obviously wants to link Barnes with the president, whose current approval ratings hover somewhere in the 40-percent range and who seems to be an excellent pinata. It's even launched a website called "Roybama."

The RGA also apparently hired the same voiceover talent who narrated Karen Handel's last campaign commercial. (Seriously, listen to that Winnie the Pooh voice. Same guy, right?)

Though Barnes probably doesn't welcome the RGA's well-funded attention, he should be a little flattered. The fact that the organization is getting involved in a red-as-you-can-get state signals the former governor's a formidable opponent.

Dammit, JBB, why must you deprive me of my one chance today to use my favorite word?

Kidding. Thanks, amigo.

It's Bush's fault

This should be an interesting campaign. Tying Roy to Obama may be good for the republican and independent voters, but it's sure going to drive the turnout in the black community. I'm not sure who wins or loses in this scenario.

King Roy has been running from Obama - I don't think turning your back on Obama will bring out the black community. Notice King Roy's: it's not about political party...blah blah blah...First the flag, now anit-president what next???

And Deal is just as bad: either way screwed.

Agreed that this tactic may help turn out Republicans, but I question whether it works with independent voters, who are mainly concerned with who will do a better job of running the state and tackling transportation and education issues.

I thought the whole asinine reason for having the registration / sign in process was to stop spammers on CL????

From what I can remember, and I'm trying not to repeat what ol' Roy's campaign slogan says, but the state of Georgia had some semblance of functioning.

AH,

It was. And it's reduced the amount of spam. (You wouldn't believe how many mornings I would wake up and find nearly 50 comments about replica jerseys. That's not the case anymore.)

But sometimes those bots (or the poor souls who manually make profiles) will slip through the system or take the effort to post their obnoxious messages. We try to remove them as soon as we can.

Roy knows that black turnout ain't gonna do it for him in this election. Blacks are less enthusiastic about Obama this year and they won't turn out like they did in '08 for the historic election. Also, Obama LOST Georgia by 5 points even with historic turnout by blacks and young folks. So, he's in South Georgia where this election will be won or lost. But, blacks and white liberals need to turnout for Barnes regardless. this is the Dems last best shot at the Governor's mansion for at least a generation.

Deal is straight from central casting - in a bad way. Barnes is yesterdays' news. What makes him think we want to see him around again? But a one-legged, red-haired, half-blind, under investigation Republican is preferable to any Democrat. I didn't used to feel that way but I am forever through voting for the party of moochers and looters. Sometimes I have to hold my nose when I'm casting the ballot, but, you know what? I did the same thing when I was voting for Democrats. Some things never change.

moochers and looters, funny I call the Republicans the same thing. Yea the difference in who they mooch and loot from is slight, but there is a little difference.

And I'm convinced the repubs via there greater facination with nation building through military conquest are a little more responsible for the military complex buildup, plus they make more of us bend over a little more for those who are in control. Thus the conclusion that the Repubs are mooching and looting more from most of us than the Dems do, so I'll vote for the Dems .

Now you have me fondly remembering the past, the last time we had a budget surplus (and the only time I can remember). Seem to recall that was was when we had a two term Dem President - (think that's only happened once in my lifetime). And as I recall in addition to the budget surplus I seem to recall we all got some tax cuts under that two term Dem pres. Wow imagine that.

"Democrat" budget surplus courtesy of Republican congress. "Bush" deficit courtesy of Democrat congress. As for Democratic tax cuts in the here and now, I expect them to announce them any day.

Oydave,

You mean aside from the tax cuts that were already passed last year?

You mean the capital gains tax cuts for small businesses which don't really pay capital gains tax? Taxes are going up, my friend. In January, if the Dims don't act, there will be a huge, across the board hike. And thanks to birdbrain Obamacare, the IRS has sweeping new powers to get all up in your ass. Thank God I live in sweet merciful, bountiful, beautiful Georgia, where a solid Republican state government, populated by trolls from central casting, will give me some shelter from the Imperial Feds.

Actually, I was referring to the tax cuts that went to 95 percent of working families (in the form of reductions in the amount of witholdings from payroll taxes).

http://tinyurl.com/y9nd676

Last I heard, the Dems want to keep the tax cuts for the lower and middle class and only let it expire for those making over $200,000 (individuals) and $250,000 (couples). That's the top 2% of individuals and top 3% of small businesses. Of course it's possible that, if enough Republicans and conservative Dems take an all-or-nothing approach, they will manage to prevent action from being taken on this issue....thereby causing all of the Bush tax cuts to expire.

None of this, by the way, has anything to do with whether Roy Barnes would make a good governor. He got kicked out last time because he pissed off teachers and racists. We'll see how he does this time.

Deal resigned from congress so he would not have to face the ethics committee. There's only one reason you do that. He conveniently forgot 5 million in debt. How can you run a State when you are worried about all that debt. Well, you could be planning to let the state pay it. Barnes is for Barnes so that leaves me no one to vote for. As for RGA ads, thank God for the mute button. FDR was my first president and I wish we could go back to those days. You only had to listen to a political speech if you wanted too. No TV thank goodness and these ads were not rammed down you throat.
