Beltline supporters to discuss ABI's decision to sit out federal funding round

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 3:52 PM

Interested in learning more about Beltline officials' decision not to pursue federal funding for bike trails — and instead let the streetcar be Atlanta's lone project to compete for the loot? You'll get a chance next Wednesday.

The Beltline Network, an alliance of community group and individual supporters of the $2.8 billion project, will discuss the issue at its monthly meeting on Sept. 1. From an email to supporters:

We will discuss the decision (for the second year in a row) by Atlanta officials to submit the Atlanta Streetcar as the City’s only TIGER Grant application. In particular, we will review the public input requirement for federal transportation dollars as well as public involvement in this most recent decision.

We're hearing Beltline officials will also attend the powwow. The meeting, which will be held at Trees Atlanta's Reynoldstown headquarters, starts at 4 p.m.

1. Doesn't the BeltLine Board have a duty to support the best interests of the BeltLine?

2. Considering that the BeltLine Board decided that funding the streetcar makes more sense than funding the BeltLine, is the BeltLine Board sincerely committed to the project, especially the light-rail component?

3. Isn't the public is supposed to have a seat on the BeltLine Board? The BeltLine website does not show such representation, and were the interests of the public considered before this funding decision was made?

4. Can anyone explain how the BeltLine's decision not to seek federal transit funding is consistent with the following statement on the BeltLine website:

"The BeltLine also scores as the highest ranking project in the Atlanta Regional Commission's (ARC) model as a transit project to mitigate congestion."

6. How many arms were twisted to make them sit this out. Was there a quid-pro-quo from someone to get them to sit it out?

The mayor is the chief executive and thus the board reports to him. The buck stops with the Mayor, not with the board. In their official capacity they must comply with his decisions. As individuals however I'm certain they are as angry as you that the Mayor is bending over for his tourist site buddies who wanted the tourist streetcar.

Can anyone explain what the BeltLine Network is? Why has its website not been updated for more than one year? Is it one of those groups that comes to life only when it suits their own purposes?

The Beltine Network was the grassroots campaign that started the Beltline and was later pushed aside by the Beltline INC.
