Shuttered GM plant in Doraville to become... a shuttered GM plant!

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 1:03 PM

A real estate developer's plan to convert the shuttered General Motors plant in Doraville into a mixed-use gem — with a little help from taxpayers, of course — appears to be kaput.

From the AJC:

The county commission voted 5 to 2 Tuesday to kill the $54 million project, which calls for giving county money to a private developer New Broad Street.

The plan called for $36 million in federal stimulus bonds and $18 million in interest, which would be paid for by a property tax increase.

Might we suggest a massive laser tag facility?

I've lived in Doraville for 25 years, and Chamblee prior to that.

Why does the GM plant site need to be some mega-development?

Why not raze the site, remediate the filth, and build neighborhoods and commercial properties?

It's right on the MARTA line and has great access to 285, Buford Hwy, and Ptree Ind Blvd. You could be in Buckhead in 20 minutes, the airport in 30, or the Mall of Georgia in 30. It's a great location and doesn't need some crazy ass development.

why not pass it so we could make a casino out of the space? income could pay for extra police in the area, help in the schools, make some nice hotels and shops around the Dora ville area. and make some extra for the state??? butt i guess I'm only government educated and i don't know what could help the state make money.

I agree w/ smitty. Developers need to stop being so grandiose (and greedy) with their plans for the site. We don't need "another Atlantic Station," which is the phrase that comes up in every public discussion of the GM site. Green space, affordable housing, and better access to the Doraville MARTA station would very welcome additions to the area.
