Morning Newsdome: Discovery Channel gunman learned how to make weapons from ... the Discovery Channel

>> Eight Pakistani military officers, including a two-star admiral, flying from Washington DC to Tampa were thought to be terrorists after one tired officer remarked, "I hope this is the final plane to the destination." Just goes to show you not to make annoying chit-chat on planes. (the Telegraph)

>> Ten Afghan election campaign workers were killed in a NATO-led air strike. It's so hard to tell who you're killing when you're hundreds of miles above them. (BBC)

>> Now for a real terrorist: Police shot and killed gunman James Lee who held hostages at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Maryland yesterday. The hostages are now safe. Apparently Lee, who had bombs strapped to his body, was obsessed with overpopulation and felt the channel didn't give the topic enough coverage, writing: "All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth." In a strange twist of fate, Lee said he learned how to make bombs in part from the channel's "MythBusters" program. (MSNBC)

>> The Pew Hispanic Center reports that 300,000 fewer people have illegally entered the United States annually since 2007, with the study citing the economy as the main deterrent. This week National Guardsmen, authorized by Obama, will begin patrolling the Arizona-Mexico border, but why bother when we can just retain our crappy economy. Problem solved. (the Wall Street Journal)

>> And finally: Marta Salinas has been waiting on the surface for her husband Yonni Barrios, one of the 33 trapped Chilean miners, when she discovered that his mistress was also waiting for him. Barrios might want to stay in that mine if he knows what's good for him. (the New York Post)

Dear Lefty Friends - don't let this opportunity pass you by. Here is a great chance to own up to yourself. The left has spent the last year and half trying to pin every act of terrorism and evil on the vast, white, racist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, bigoted Tea Party. It is done so well and so repeatededly and without shame. The Left impugns, maligns and besmirches all who oppose them quite viciously I would add.

But now you have another opportunity to take a stand against one of your own. Or will you just refuse, again, to generalize and own up to yet another crazy lefty because it is one of your own?

Ah I see. Well then this, of course, crazy individual must be is an "outlier", a depraved individual, who may have lost his job, who has struggled paying his bills and may have marital difficulty. Please find one of your many compelling reasons for this latest outburst on the left side of the world.

Then quickly get back to your endless attepmts of trying to pin every act of terrorism and evil on the vast, white, racist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, bigoted Tea Party.

I am waiting for the hate comments against me again in 3...2...1....

umm - what the fuck are you talking about, pistol pete. your comment make zero sense, regardless of political ideology.

seriously - no hate here - just complete befuddlement.

Al Gore - ideological menace!

That just cracks me up. Funny, too, how the Puffington Host moved the story WAY down the page once it was known the guy was inspired by Prince Albert, one of their own bloggers.

And hey Bobby, the planes in Afghan air strikes are not "hundreds of miles above them." I'm hoping that was just a mind fart because it's really ignorant.

The Taliban goons are right down on the ground and, unlike our forces, they KNOW they are killing innocents when they do it. No military on earth goes to the lengths we do to avoid civilian casualties.

That is exactly my point - it seems that we can only belittle, call racist, call bigoted, claim homophobic or islamaphobic if you perceive the threat is from the right.

If a left wing nut goes beserek at Discovery Channel's HQ the person must be an "outlier", a depraved individual, who may have lost his job, who has struggled paying his bills and may have marital difficulty.

With the left there is always an excuse or they are forgiven completely.

How in the fuck did you surmise that this person is a "left wing" anything, Pete? Serious question.

I don't recall anyone in these comment sections implying that the Tea Party is responsible for any terrorist act -- please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

What people DO say about the Tea Party is that it is a front group of billionaires, successfully stirring FEAR into every sub-90 IQ American within earshot of its preferred media outlets.

FEAR - of The Others
FEAR - of the brown "muslim president"
FEAR - of the brown immigrants coming for your jobs
FEAR - of the brown voters who dare to elect the candidate they best identify with
FEAR - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror

"The Republican National Committee is so committed to fear that their internal documents admit they have no other platform for 2010 but to bang the drum of TERROR and SOCIALISM as hard as possible. People who are scared shitless don't need policy papers. They just want to make the fear go away, and they won't ask any questions about it in the process. The deficit is too scary, and if you need to give people a tiny tax rebate to make it disappear, it hardly matters that the wealthiest 1% get a monstrous deficit-creating return on revenue. It doesn't matter if the Arizona economy can even function without illegals, because there are narcotraffickers and beheaded bodies in the desert. Imam Rauf was never the face of American Islam for a conservative administration, because now the terrorists are plotting at Ground Zero. There is no object permanence. This is how history ends."

For what it's worth, Pete: I am a straight, white, American male, raised Catholic. You and others identification with the lynch-mob mentality of this "movement" disgusts me and makes me ashamed of my country.

pp, make some sense, son.

if anything, this gunman sounds like a right wing loony.

u have probably sat next to him at the meetings.

The Tea Party is my Mom, who's never had a political bone in her body, driving a mini-van full of biddies to listen in the rain to nobody of previous note say things that wouldn't sound unusual at a Sunday school picnic.

I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you.

Or they are my dad. A guy that sends me racist emails constantly and owns way too many guns than would be needed to protect his home. (his home in cumming in a gated community that would never need to be protected) He is not a bad guy. He would even say that he is not racist. Hell he has black neighbors that he would consider friends. But i still get the racist emails and nasty comments about my home in the city. Everyone's baby boomer father is this exact same person. That is the Tea Party.

Nad and WWWW - you are so left you cannot even see it anymore - you are so deep in the sand box of your own lefty mess you fail to see this Loon as a far left freak!? Maybe because he is quite similar to your self in ideology. Are you unable to find fault in your own far left loon?

Nad - Democrats have far exceeded cash contributions from their rich people, that is a discussion you may want to research some especially things like the Tides Foundations, Media Matrters, Moveon.org etc...I will admit the Repubs have a few folks with dollars as well.

Funny thing is States with Democrat Govenors and especially large urban cities with Democratiic mayors are far more likely line their own pockets with cash while the supposed War on Poverty drags on and on and on...

please present some sort of evidence that the hostage taker is a "lefty loon". other than your deep seated desrire that he be one.

Projecting maybe but i have yet to meet a Teabagger that didnt fit this description. I deal with contractors on a daily basis too with work. I hear the same racist, ignorant, fearful bullshit from them. They are also the Tea Party.

Nad - the demonization of a movement by the Liberal Media that you may espouse to I find reprehensible. You appear to have bought into the Liberal propeganda Lock stock and barrell judging from your hatred of any opinion contrary to yours. Your IQ quote, your FEAR Qutoes and your true paragraph in Quotes is pure hyperbole.

Your opinions I find extremely Left and Loony.

pp, you're sooo right.

the hostage taker demanded "NO MORE BABIES!" from the discovery channel, which the media may not want us to know is a core tenant of left wing ideology but so clearly is that it would be INSANE to think otherwise.

glad u caught that.

but now i fear u may know too much.

the drones and moveon.org are probably watching u right now.

if we never hear from u again, just know that we know that u knew. and we salute u.

pp, your thoughts on the new signature idea? i don't want to get caught up in the matrix before my underground bunker is fully stocked with homemade deer jerky.

Way to go WWW! Thank you for your kind concerns all I wanted to see is if the lefties here would condemn one of their own...But alas you will not. Too bad he wasn't a right wing person huh? A conservative or gasp...a Tea Party Supporter!!! Then you all could have had some real fun today beating up on his extremism etc...Then this poor sap would be all over your libeal media sources and condemned as right wing tea party supporter!!

newsflash, moron - this nutjob sounds about as left wing as oydave's mom.

your logic is faulty. but we're used to that.

my advice to u is to get out of the house more often. seek out human interaction. stop relying on talk radio and the drudge report to be your link to the outside world.

pete - you are so far off base lumping someone as clearly deranged as James Lee with a political movement or ideology of any kind.

people like this (regardless of statements or demands) are in no way credible. any more than Ted Kaczynski, John Hinkley, Mark David Chapman, Dylan Klebold, Eric Harris, Timothy Mcveigh and Jim Jones were credible in their remarks/actions.

your arguments aren't even logical enough to be specious. they are simply irrelevant and misguided.

you are in way over your head. maybe you could stick commentary more to your suiting - like bud light lime vs. bud light wheat, or something else equally banal.

Posted by Karl on September 2, 2010 at 4:46 PM

Karl gets it partly right. You can't hang the nutters around the necks of sane folks on either the right or the left.

The denial gymnastics are getting spectacular, though. The guy said "An Inconvenient Truth" was his awakening. His nutter issues were environmental. Al Gore is of the left. Environmental activism, rightly or wrongly or by default, is of the left. If you have to peg him as left or right, and you don't, I'm just saying, the guy was from the left.

He is not Al Gore's intellectual child, though, he is a bona fide nut.

report
Posted by wesleywhatwhat on September 2, 2010 at 6:07 PM

i get it right entirely.

if it's appropriate to lump in James Lee with the left just b/c he said Al Gore inspired him, then we can go ahead and make John Hinkley an actor b/c he said Jodie Foster spoke to him and Charles Manson a rock star b/c he said the Beatles spoke to him.

it's more likely he was a paranoid psychitzophrenic than anything else.

i mean hitler was pretty right wing - nationalist, pro marriage, anti-gay, pro christian values. just sayin'. you can paint anyone with any brush if you want. but it's a slippery slope and a dangerous game.

you simply have to throw out the loons.

report
Posted by Karl on September 2, 2010 at 7:06 PM

Karl and Oydave are right that it's unfair to attribute to any movement the attributes of its most extreme followers.

That said, this guy's overwhelming obsession is overpopulation and people having "disgusting human babies." (Maybe he's changed too many diapers.) You'd be hard pressed to find any left-wing media outlet that's against babies.

He expresses some ideas that sound left-wing...anti-war and concern for global warming. (Although calling peace movements frauds because they support babies isn't very "left.") But he also rants about immigration and "anchor babies." More of a right-wing thing. Overall, the main political sentiment he expresses is "crazy."

There are actual left-wing terrorists. Environmentalists who blow up power plants and such. And there are right wing terrorists, such as Timothy McVeigh. But what really defines these people is that they value whatever ideology they espouse over human life.
