Atlanta's less crime-ridden than other area cities

According to FBI statistics, Atlanta ranked fourth in overall crime in 2009 among 10 metro area cities — per capita of course.

College Park didn't fare well, ranking first in both violent crime and overall crime, with 150 violent crimes per 10,000 people and 1,178 total crimes per 10,000 people.

East Point and Chamblee ranked second and third in overall crime, with 871 and 771 total crimes per 10,000 people respectively.

Even though it was fourth in overall crime, Atlanta ranked second in violent crime with 115 per 10,000 people. Still, that represents a marked decrease in violent crime, in fact in 2009, the violent crime rate was lowest it's been in five years. From the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

Violent crimes were down 14 percent to 6,359 even as the city’s population rose to 552,901. Broken down, the violent crimes in 2009 included 80 murders, 2,725 robberies, 135 forcible rapes and 3,419 aggravated assaults.
Violent crimes numbered 7,403 in 2008, 8,075 in 2007, 7,548 in 2006 and 7,213 in 2005.
