One of the original Kings of Comedy, and former CNN contributor, D.L. Hughley, is in Atlanta doing two shows tonight and tomorrow night at 8 and 10 p.m. at Uptown Comedy Corner. The Loaf recently spoke to Hughley about what he's been up to, and why he's in town on a Tuesday.
How are you doing, what have you been up to?
I'm doing great, I've just been on the road working. I was in Grand Rapids last week, and New York for the weekend, and I'll be coming to Atlanta on Tuesday.
Tuesday-Wednesday shows aren't usual in comedy, is there a reason you're in town on those days?
I'm getting ready to do a new special, so I've been on the road testing out a new hour. I'm always on the road, but when I start doing the Tuesday and Wednesday shows it's because I'm gearing up for a new tour.
Are you working on anything else in Atlanta, or are you only in town for the shows?
I just came down for the shows, but I always love Atlanta. I was just there in February hosting a show with Bruce Bruce and Sommore. I love Atlanta because the crowds there are very urbane. They're well-read, but southern, which is nice because the two don't always seem to go together.
When are you planning to do the special?
I don't have a set date yet, but I'd like to do it within the next 60 days.
Do you already have the entire special written, or are you still working stuff out on the road?
I've had some stuff for it, but I've been finding new material as I go. I was just in Europe for all of August. We were in Germany, Belgium and France, so I came back to the states and saw a lot that caught my attention.
Like, I think it's interesting that somebody would burn the Koran. It survived the famine and the holy wars and almost couldn't survive that redneck. And that a conservative won in Delaware. They're worrying about prayer in school... kids are getting shot and they're not doing anything about the gun laws. Kids are going to get shot while they pray.
I'm glad these guys are getting their deserved hype but seriously.... 'Is art the new…

More recently I've talked to people who know more about the Kell building than me…
