Ever since the Atlanta Rollergirls first rolled out six years ago, there have been natural comparisons to professional wrestling thanks to the pun-laden monikers and other theatrics associated with the roller derby action (including the sport’s more choreographed history). And ever since local up-and-comer Platinum Championship Wrestling began muscling its way into the national wrestling scene in January, its mix of absurd drama, social commentary and athletics have seemed like a natural fit for the Rollergirls’ audience.

This Saturday, the two entities go head to head as their biggest events of the year take place concurrently at different venues.

For the Rollergirls, the big season finale, billed as Clash of the Titans, puts the league championship on the line. The first of two sold-out bouts is a grudge match for third and fourth place beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday between last year’s champs the Toxic Shocks and challengers the Sake Tuyas, who knocked the Shocks out of championship contention last month. Then the main event, pitting the Apocalypstix against the Denim Demons for the 2010 ARG championship, begins at 7:30 p.m. Regardless of who wins this bout, Atlanta roller derby history will be made as neither team has won a championship.

History will also be made for PCW at Kennesaw State University when the indie league puts on its biggest show to date, Sacred Ground: Chapter One. This more testosterone-fueled affair includes similarly over-the-top personalities and athletic feats, with some of the wrestling world’s top stars coming to town to take on PCW’s top talents.

Scheduled to be in action are Roderick Strong, current World Champion for Philadelphia-based Ring of Honor wrestling, and ROH favorite Colt Cabana, who will be taking on PCW’s Nemesis. Mexican cross-dressing star Cassandro will take on PCW’s resident loudmouth Dwight Power, and Magno from MTV2’s Lucha Libre USA will take on the mysterious Phantom. PCW’s toughest female competitor Pandora will take on former Total Nonstop Action Wrestling Knockouts Champion Amazing Kong, a behemoth of a woman. PCW’s first tag-team champions will be crowned as the Washington Bullets take on the team of Scott Steele and “The Demigod” Mason. PCW Champion “The Revelation” Shane Marx will put his title up against wrestling’s oldest title when he takes on National Wrestling Alliance World Champion “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce. And in the main event, Jay Fury, one of PCW’s most impressive and intimidating talents, accepts the challenge of former TNA World Champion Samoa Joe.

So whether you choose to see girls on skates taking their aggressions out on each other for the league title or larger-than-life personas entering the ring for championship belts and bragging rights, both of these events offer comic book-like escapism in the form of athletic performance and competition.
