Local artist Dave Cook balances the comical with the macbre

When there’s something strange in Atlanta art, who ya gonna call? Well, local artist Dave Cook is often the culprit when it comes to comical depictions of zombies, ghosts, rollergirls and the like. His latest show opened Oct. 5 as part of the Plaza Theatre’s Art Opening and a Movie series, with appearances by Atlanta Rollergirls, zombies, pinup girls and a screening of the 1984 horror comedy classic Ghostbusters. And there were even a couple of customized Ectomobiles sitting out front, and several male and female Ghostbusters suited up for the festivities.

With its themes of rock ’n’ roll, monsters and pinup hotties, Cook’s poster and comic book art is fit for the Halloween season. “I grew up on a heavy dose of monster movies, KISS music and comic books, and I’ve never stopped,” he says. “I now incorporate all that imagery and sensibility into my work.”

Aside from monsters and tough girls he also creates dinosaurs, rocket ships and puppy dogs for onesies and baby pajamas at his day job with Carter’s baby clothing company. And he had some of his tiny critter creations on display at the opening to show that he is capable of more than just creatures of the flesh (rotting or otherwise).

“I have always been able to do many different art styles,” says Cook. “I do a lot of puppies and dinosaurs [at Carter’s] and they all must look different. It’s not as easy as it looks to draw a cute dinosaur driving a monster truck for a pair of toddler pajamas. Then I come home and work on blood-drooling zombies. It’s all about balance.”

While many know Cook more for the work he's done for local haunted houses Chambers of Horror and Netherworld, Plaza’s monthly Splatter Cinema events and horror-themed rock bands like Electric Frankenstein, his current show features an array of work that might surprise many of his fans with its diversity.

“I work with so many cool clients around Atlanta, and each has its own personality,” he says. “It is great to step back and see it as a body of work. Some people know I do Netherworld and some people know I do the Atlanta Rollergirls, but a lot of people don’t know that I do both. So to see it all together is pretty cool.”

If you missed the opening, you can catch Cook at his booth at the Little Five Points Halloween Festival and Parade on Oct. 16. His work will also hang at the Plaza through Oct. 31, with additional screenings of Ghostbusters this weekend.

Art Opening and a Movie Through Oct. 31. Additional screenings of Ghostbusters at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8-10 and midnight Oct. 8. 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave., Atlanta. 404-873-1939. www.idrawmonsters.com. www.plazaatlanta.com.
