Ray: Leah runs into Ray while he’s waiting for Jonathan outside of a comic book shop. Their conversation is about as awkward as it gets, but news isn’t all bad. When Jonathan finally shows up (delayed by insomnia and masturbation), they walk inside to find out Ray’s self-published comic is a hit.

He drops Joan Didion’s Year of Magical Thinking into a conversation with Jonathan, “She describes how her husband died just snap like that. It just seems so unfair that we can be turned off like a switch, like we never lived, like we never mattered. I don’t want to be turned off.”
The trouble: Invigorated by his comic’s success, Ray meets a mysterious lady at the bar. “You could grow on a woman,” she says. “I have,” he says.
