Are Mr. Brainwash and Banksy the same person? HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEA ALERT!

MBW and Banksy

  • MBW and Banksy

While browsing a blog post trolling for ideas for team Halloween Costume ideas for my 2-year-old son I came upon this posting on the SpoutBlog concerning the "stars" of Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Unlike the Joaquin Phoenix movie, the Banksy doc is still a mystery as far was what’s real and what’s made up. Is Thierra Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash, aka “MBW,” really just an alias of Banksy? We may never know. But you can address the question in masquerade form by dressing up as a combination of the two “characters.” All you need is some facial hair (sideburns and mustache, real or fake), a pork pie hat and a retro polyester shirt. That’s the MBW part. Then, over that you wear a black hoodie, obscuring most of your face. It’s your choice if you want the underneath costume to ever be revealed to people, but in that case the gag is only appreciated by you alone.

So, I Binged (trying it out, thoughts?) images of Banksy, and I came up with this:

I used to wish I knew what Kiss looked Like, until, I found out.
  • Some British Tabloid
  • I used to wish I knew what Kiss looked like unmasked, until, I found out.

And this shot of MBW at the LA Show, looks...well, you decide.

IIIIIIIII'm pretty sure there were a good number of instances where Banksy and MBW were filmed together interacting in Exit in the same shot. Could be the work of film-editing magicians, but that's crazy accent isn't. I'm gonna say they're two VERY different people.

Yeah Banksy has what we refer to as 'friends' who put on a hoodie while he perpetrates the world biggest bait and switch, pretending to be the worlds worst film maker while being the world greatest joker. Gotta love his work :)

if you look at the body shape and posture on the top photos, and the chin, profile, lip and eyebrows on bottom, this is TOTallyt he same man. he got us good. may as well give him credit for it. it's totally him.

Guetta has a very noticeable receding hairline. The guy in that top picture has a nice head of hair. And I don't think they are the same person at all. I think Guetta is a tard, and exploited street art for the purpose of making money. He doesn't even MAKE the art. He finds pictures, tells some people he wants to change them up a bit, and those people do the work for him. Banksy didn't do it to make money, although he ended up making money from it eventually. Guetta got rich virtually overnight by ganking the idea from the people he followed around.

Guetta was there at the right time and place. Similar to Ringo or Charlie as drummers. Banksy is clever, the aesthetic is reflective to me, to a very famous artist from the 60's in Spain called Rafael Canogar. Canogar's graphic work was pulled out of a hat for the times before their was photoshop or Mac's.
I am tired of artist hiring people to do their work! Warhol, Kostabi, Koons, and Hirst do it-done it!..
I stick to this quote by Leonardo Da Vinci, " Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art."

Just by their body shapes alone you know they are totally different. Banksy is lanky and slender while the Frenchman although slim, is quite short. His calf to thigh ratio is a bit off. While Banksy is a typical soccer sort of bloke. plus there are several scenes where they appear together.

I just watched Exit from the gift shop, great movie!
Here is my theory, I think Banksy created Mr Brainwash, together devising a plan to make a statement to people in the art world how phony people really are. Just to prove a point that anyone can create art and sell there work. As if Mr Brainwash sold that much work a nobody who did non of the work, the joke is on the people who bought the work...he had a staff of artist who did the work....which I am sure was influenced by banksy...how can anyone take a name like Mr Brainwash serious. Who cares what banksy looks like he is a genius who see's reality that no one wants to see.

I took a look at the banksy website banksy supporter posted and I totally agree and another thing MBW has big hair u would of seen it under that ski mask but it looks like he has short hair. And I also agree that we shouldn't know who he is it would ruin who banksy is and everyone would be on him 24/7 and how would he be able to do his art in piece? It should stay the way it is. -Alma .A.

The two photos do look quite similar, and they very well could be the same guy, but who says it's actually banksy? For all we know Thierra could have been working for banksy for years and this video was just made to get some of the attention off of banksy himself and on to some other guy. I guess we may never really know. Cheers to banksy for being such a crafty and sly sonofabitch

I do agree with the idea that the two pics look very similar. And could very well be Banksy in both. My true opinion is that Banksy wanted to be able to explore a new style of art, while being able to interact with others about his art. Where before he couldn't. But after creating Mr. Brainwash, he could create a new form of art while opening up to others and showing people how he feels about his art. While making a LOT of money in the process. This way the media wouldn't rush him with, the question of: "what took so long to reveal yourself?". But instead the media came to him as if he was a new artist and asked him the question: "where does your inspiration come from?". The man is a genius.

Neither of those people are him. If you watch the documentrya type film of netflix callde Banksy's Coming for Dinner, at 54minutes 48 seconds to 54 minutes 56 seconds you'll get great views of his face

it is definetely not thhe same person because banksy is an artist not commercialist, mr brainwash is a figure that figured out how to make money on that stuff, but if it really is Banksy then banksy is the biggest genius of the art world, in other hand he is just a poor victim of commercialism ,which made the art that mr MBW actually made money on , so if the story of "exit" is true Banksy is a victim, which I believe he is.

It's too convenient. Banksy soaks up fame from anonymity. It gets harder for him to maintain anonymity. When he tries to do his 1st show he realizes that all of the secrecy is limiting the preparation and size of his shows so he invents a backstory for his real self, pretends that it is his driver. Now he is free to hire assistants, prepare for his own shows, be seen in public. Banksy and Mr Brainwash are 100% the same guy. Brainwash just didn't learn street art styles from filming artists and making a single sticker. The only fake is the guy in the hoodie with the English accent.
