The renowned Indian dancer Priyadarsini Govind will perform for the first time in Atlanta this Sunday, November 14, at 14th Street Playhouse. Govind dances in a style known as Bharatanatyam, one of India's most ancient dance forms, almost 2000 years old (Take that, ballet, you young 400-year-old whippersnapper, you). The form involves movement of the body, but also emphasizes facial expression, eye, head and neck movement, and mime to convey emotion. And if you think dancing as prima ballerina in a story ballet looks difficult, know that a single female Bharatanatyam dancer often takes on every single role in an Abhinaya or dramatic performance. The show will feature live traditional Indian music, as well.
Priyadarsini Govind performs at 14th Street Playhouse on Sunday, November 14, at 3 pm. For more information, visit Anamica.org or call (770) 518-9585.
