Corazón Abriendo explores Mayan culture through dance

CORE Performance's latest work Corazón Abriendo or "heart opening" is an exploration of the company's encounters with Mayan myth, history and culture. Built on experiences from members' residencies in Chiapas, Mexico, and Guatemala, the work incorporates dance, live music, video, story-telling and sculpture. It's a return to subject matter the company first explored in 2006, part of Artistic Director Sue Schroeder's lifetime fascination with Mayan culture. Schroeder says the trips weren't directed towards a specific performance, but rather impressions were allowed to form on their own and the pieces emerged organically from what company members experienced. During the trips, dancers took weaving classes with local artisans, visited ancient archeological sites, attended festivals and explored the natural environment, all guided by local anthropologists and archeologists.

CORE Performance Company performs Corazón Abriendo at the Balzer Theater in downtown Atlanta on Friday, November 19, and Saturday, November 20, at 8 pm. Tickets are $15-20. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 678-528-1500 or visit the Balzer's website.
