Southwest Atlanta got all Wild West this morning

Now with more bullet holes!

If I've said it once, I've said it 236 times (once for each day I've lived in Atlanta): people here don't drive right. Still, I like to think that, in general, most drivers try as best they can to not kill one another, if only to avoid the hassle.

This morning on I-285, however, the driver of a silver Lexus did a terrible job of trying not to kill fellow drivers when he fired four rounds from his .45 caliber handgun into a black Dodge Ram pickup.

According to Bobby Smith, the driver of the Lexus, he was traveling south on I-285 when a the black pickup, driving aggressively, began merging into his lane and then swerved into his vehicle, forcing him into the guardrail. He told police he fired his weapon because he feared for his safety when the truck approached him after the initial accident.

Miko Wright, the driver of the Dodge, gave police a markedly different story, saying he was just minding his own business when Smith began following him closely on the interstate, pulled up next to him and started shooting. Pshaw.

A witness statement is probably closest to the truth. From a police narrative:

"Mrs. Hilda Reid said that she was also travelling south on I-285 ... [when] she noticed a Dodge Ram driving aggressively and was driving in the far right two lanes of travel. Mrs. Reid said it looked as though the driver of the Dodge Ram was waiting for a silver car to pass before changing lanes. Mrs. Reid said as the two vehicles approached the Langford Pkwy. off ramp, it appeared as though the Ram was trying to force the silver car off of the road. Mrs. Reid said the Ram did force the silver car off the road and spun the vehicle around. Mrs. Reid said after the accident, the driver of the Lexus began getting out of his vehicle and the Dodge Ram began driving in reverse and struck a black SUV. Mrs reid said the driver of the lexus got out of his vehicle with a gun and fired shots at the Dodge Ram as the truck drove off."

A reminder to drivers: try to not kill each other!
