Crime Man shot and killed during robbery in Virginia-Highland

A man was shot and killed during a confrontation with a robber in Virginia-Highland on Monday night, news outlets report.
An Atlanta Police spokeswoman told CBS Atlanta and the AJC that a man and woman were confronted by a masked robber in the 600 block of Virginia Avenue near Grady High School. A scuffle ensued and the man was shot in the chest. The gunman reportedly escaped with the woman's cell phone and purse.
CBS Atlanta reported neighbors as saying a black SUV was seen speeding from the scene.
Atlanta Police did not immediately return requests for comment. We'll update if any new information becomes available.

At first blush I thought the man was just foolish for not complying with their demands. But the woman said the men demanded keys to her apt and that the two take the men to it. That sends chills up my spine.

I'm sure the dead victim wishes he could "get a life" right about now. Also, not a single news report has stated the race of the alleged perpetrators. But a pat on the back to you, S. Dekalb, for jumping the gun with class!
hey south dekalb - i think it's neat that even though there is no mention of race in either the printed or the video, you've managed to bring it in. also - if you live in the SWD district, you don't even live in the city of ATL. my advice to you is to fuck off and perhaps consider that you are the racist one. no one should have to put up with being shot in the chest in his own apt. complex, regardless of his race or his feelings for his chosen city.

the "everyone is racist" smoke screen is pretty easy to see through. juding from his reaction, i'd guess that the guy is either really dumb and racist, or actively involved.

Has anybody noticed the increase in graffiti in the VA Highlands? Take a look at almost every street sign. It’s a signal to criminals and thugs that the area isn’t policed in an appropriate manner. If you can take the time to pull out a can of spray paint and write all over a sign and get away with it, you could probably pull out a gun and rob someone in the same amount of time. As mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliana understood this and made the effort to clean things up all around. If you own a home or rent in that part of town, you better be loud and vocal about this because your property values and safety are at great risk. VA Highlands is a short drive from very bad neighborhoods in Atlanta and the thugs/criminals/gang member, don’t seem worried about running into the police.
I was at the apartment last night spending time with my girlfriend and I could see the poor young man’s body. How can someone do this to another human being? For what, money? My thoughts and prayers go out to the young man’s family.
There was also an armed home invasion and sexual assault early this AM in Grant Park... the three guys were caught... Quazabious Bryant, 18, Terrick Handley, 20, and Sherdarian Varner, 20. All former Grady students. This city is a mess. So what are you going to do to fix it S. Dekalb Voter? Or is all of this OK with you...
No disrespect intended to the victim. I was meatly making a preemptive strike against the people on this site that always complain about the "thugs" who have taken over the city and the incompetent city leadership.

If one takes a gander at the latest edition of this story, it appears SWD wasn't too far off the mark in his preemptive comments. His only error seems to have been which article he posted under.

I got drunk and wandered into the wrong part of town, Ashby Street. A couple guys approached me and I handed over my cash as quick as they could ask for it. I really didn't want to know if they had a gun or not.
My life is worth more than a cell phone and a purse. I also feel the lives of the people robbing me are valuable and wouldn't feel comfortable shooting at them.

There's a pretty substantial difference between "give me what's in your wallet/purse" and "walk me to your residence and let me in."

The Grant park one sound similar to what happened here, but are they the same people, lets hope so. This way they are now off the streets.
As for a one term mayor, Ha Ill believe that when I see it. He is part of the problem that this city has been dealing with forever. As for the Chief, well he has about as much back bone as a jellyfish. But then again show me a Chief since Bell that has had one.
This city has always treated public safety as an afterthought. Look at EVERY campaign promise. More cops, better protection etc, and what has happened so far? NOTHING. Until you get a Chief that tells it like it is, broken you will get little results.

Nad is right on this one. No good will come from a robber forcing you to take them to your residence or forcing you to go to theirs. Look up Vanessa Coleman and Channon Christian, or Jennifer Hawke-Petit. These Home Invasion or abduction cases are the worst. Times like that you will wish you had a gun on you.
There were two attacks in Ormewood Park last night, possibly by the same perpetrators. The first incident involved a man held at gun point and was told to go inside with the three black young males, but he refused b/c his wife and daughter were inside. They hit him with a golf club and tried to take him inside - he started yelling and ran from them. They shot at him and took off. The went down the street and entered another resident firing two shots before they left. How is this not even in the news??? It is likely related to the other crimes in VA Highlands and Grant Park. This is out of control and the violence is getting intolerable.

Crime is down though. Even the mayor of St. Louis says crime is down. The problem is the numbers. It's irresponsible to use numbers in that manner.

Tell you what NOTYOU... as soon as gay men start running around robbing people at gunpoint and killing them in their homes I will be the first to step up, denounce my community and demand change... in the meantime... people are being murdered by young black men all over town. The African American community has allowed and even perpetuated the perceived glamor of the "gangsta lifestyle" and there is only one community that can turn this around... and that would be the African American community. It is sad that the news wont report "race" because it may offend people. Facts are facts. It was 3 black males that did both crimes in Ormewood and Grant Park. They left one residence and went to the other. You people would be amazed at the amount of crimes that occur that are not reported by the news.
Again the mayor is busy talking about a ferris wheel,and not crime that is happening. You have a Chief that is talking about increasing the internal affairs division and not demanding more equipment for his department. Priorities people.
It is sad but until everyone stays focused not only on public safety, but prosecution of these thugs things will not change. Don't forget arresting them is only the beginning of the process, it is the judges that are just as, if not more responsible for the problems that we are facing.
When these people are caught, go on line and look at there criminal histories, I will bet it will be as long as any of you are tall. It will be littered with plea bargains, and diminished sentences. Oh and lets not forget Fulton county's answer to everything probation.
When you get out of your cars be aware of your surroundings. Look before getting out of your car, look before leaving your house. Keep an eye out on your neighbors, and in your neighborhood. If you see something that does not look right call 911 and be as descriptive as possible.

The first thing you do is go into a panic when it happens and start blaming the easiest group of people to scapegoat. You live in one of the safest cities in the country and you just can't stop crying and wallowing in fear whenever something bad happens. Well you know what? Shit happens. And no matter who the mayor or the police chief is it can't be prevented. Let the cops catch the mutherfuckers responsible and live your fucking life. Man the fuck up already.
All I know is, I knew what race they were when I first read the article. No one had to tell me.
