Dexter finally returns to greatness in its third-to-last episode of the season, delivering a grim, gratifying installment that includes some of the series’ most harrowing material ever—including images of 12 rape victims in situ, recorded screams from those same rapes, three disturbing interviews with our villains’ first victim, and Lumen’s initiation as a serial killer—as well as the culmination of Dexter and Lumen’s season-long flirtation in a scene that, against the odds, plays out with complete conviction. It also features some of the supporting cast’s best moments of the season, as they all put their goofy personal bullshit on the back burner and start acting like real cops. (Who else cheered out loud when Angel cut off Maria before she could ask about their relationship?)
