According to an e-mail sent by Museum Director Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, "Last week an anonymous donor contributed $75,000 in honor of my ambitious vision for the Museum. President Beverly Daniel Tatum, colleagues in Institutional Advancement, and the Museum staff share my enthusiasm for this generous endorsement."
Nice! More details after the jump.
2011 promises to be exceptional. In the coming weeks we will officially announce 15 x 15, an acquisitions initiative to acquire 15 works of art by [the museum's] 15th anniversary (fall of 2011). This acquisitions project will enable the Museum to purchase works by an array of emerging, mid-career, and established artists — many whose works have been featured in exhibitions that the Museum has originated. The dynamic wish list includes works by artists such as María Magdelena Campos-Pons, Renée Cox, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lauren Kelley, Nandipha Mntambo, Wangechi Mutu, and Carrie Mae Weems.
Inspired by the gift, the museum is launching fundraising drive with the hope of raising an additional $25,000 by year's end.
Currently on view at the museum is Evenly Yoked: Bradley McCallum & Jacqueline Tarry, which Cinque Hicks described as "the rapidly maturing work of two fearless artists preparing the way for a new and more subtle conversation about race." The show remains on view through Saturday Dec. 4.
Museum hours: Tues.-Fri., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sat., noon-4 p.m. 350 Spelman Lane Southwest, 404-270-5345.
