Explosives found under NW Atlanta bridge... wait, what? (Update)

Posted By on Wed, Dec 1, 2010 at 12:16 PM

Police discovered a "bundle of explosives" under a bridge this morning at Hollywood and Hightower roads in northwest Atlanta, 11 Alive reports:

The bridge in the Hollywood Courts community of Northwest Atlanta is now being inspectied by Atlanta Fire and Police, ATF, Homeland Security, and bomb squad officials.

A small business about a mile and a half away from the bridge was evacuated as a precaution. There are no other businesses or homes in the immediate area.

Guess that makes us feel a little bit better? More details as they become available.

UPDATE, 3:20 p.m. If you were planning to stop by after work and reclaim your TNT, you're out of luck. Atlanta Police have detonated the bundle.

Officer Kim Jones of the Atlanta Police says Georgia Department of Transportation said in a statement that workers discovered the bundle of explosives during a routine bridge inspection. Cops don't know how the dynamite ended up under the bridge.

But Jones says "At this time, the APD has no reason to believe that this is an act of terrorism or that this incident poses any security threat."
