Golden Globes nominates "The Walking Dead," other zombies

AMC's hit Atlanta-based horror series "The Walking Dead" won a Golden Globe nomination for Best TV Series, Drama, going against "Boardwalk Empire," "Dexter," "The Good Wife" and "Mad Men." Otherwise, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 68th annual award nominations featured the usual combination of deserving work and WTF choices.

The Golden Globes' split personality manifests most clearly in the difference between the Best Drama and Best Musical or Comedy categories. The dramas are all major award-winners and Oscar contenders: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Social Network and The King's Speech. (Those films respective directors swept the Best Director category.) The musical/comedies, however, probably includes only one feature that deserves it: the nontraditional family comedy The Kids Are All Right. Otherwise, nominees include the extremely popular but tepidly-received Alice in Wonderland, Bruce Willis' likable, forgettable action comedy Red, the roundly derided action comedy The Tourist and the underwhelming musical Burlesque — probably the only big-name, non-animated musical that qualifies.

One can only assume the HFPA really, really wants Johnny Depp to attend this year, having nominated him for Best Actor, Musical/Comedy for both Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist.
