In honor of Boxing Day, a sampler of the worst boxing movies ever made.
We watched them, so you don't have to.
5. The Main Event
Three words you don't want to hear when you are talking about boxing: "The Striesand Collection."
Three more words: "A Glove Story."
This misfire was sufficiently skewered by the New York Times' Vincent Canby upon its initial release.
I'll let him hold the floor:
"This sort of situation could only be funny if it's out of character, and it is out of character for Mr. O'Neal. The pushy cosmetics executive, however, seems to be an extension of the role played in real-life by Miss Streisand, who co-produced the movie, stars in it and seems to have ordered every close-up and line-reading. Miss Streisand has become a contradiction: she's too much without being enough.
In her early films — Funny Girl, On a Clear Day, What's Up Doc? and even Hello, Dolly, she gave signs of attempting to stretch her talent. Now that she's appearing in her own, made-to-order productions, the talent appears to have shrunk and become inflexible. The performance here is blunt, rude, unpleasant and inescapable."
4. Rocky IV
Is it possible that Rocky V is worse than this? I wouldn't know. IV TKO'd me from the franchise. I haven't bothered to watch another. In this piece of jingoistic dookie even James Brown's musical contribution feels slight and insubstantial.
3. Great White Hype
When Samuel L. Jackson is allowed to chew the scenery, we all suffer.
2. The Champ
There's no crying in boxing. Even if Rick Schroder does have a "Y" in his name.
1. Against the Ropes
To tell the story of real-life promoter Jackie Kallen, Meg Ryan goes all Erin Brockovich complete with skimpy dresses and a trumped up working-class accent. The result is embarrassing.
In this FanHouse video, long time trainer Macka Foley shared his thoughts on what he feels are the best and worst boxing films.
