>> In the most important court trial in modern Russian history, former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and business partner Platon Lebedev were found guilty of embezzlement today after being arrested in 2003 on tax evasion charges. It’s another example of Vladimir Putin’s “vendetta politics,” steamrolling Khodorkovsky who previously opposed Putin. Just when you think America is irreversibly corrupt, there’s always Russia. >> Following two bombs last week that injured two people at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome, the same type of bomb was sent to the Greek embassy in GreeceRome but safely defused. The bombs were believed to be sent by the Italian dissent group Informal Anarchist Federation, just in case you thought it was from the Formal League of Order. (the New York Times)

>> Arizona House Rep. Frank Pratt was beaten, bound and left unconscious by an unknown assailant outside his swimming pool store on Christmas morning. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Bristol Palin has fled Wasilla for Arizona where she bought a $172,000 house in cash in suburban Maricopa. Coincidence? (CNN, the New York Times)

>> Everyone’s favorite WikiLeaks muckraker Julian Assange has signed a $1.5 million book deal with Random House. Assange told newspapers that he doesn’t want to write a book, but he has to somehow pay for all his legal costs. We don’t want you to write a book either, Julian. (the Guardian)
