Hot trend sparked by snowstorm: People walking in the streets to destinations

Atlantans who have remained indoors for the last few days have done the right thing. But they’ve missed out on some breathtaking images of Atlanta you’d more likely encounter in The Walking Dead or some post-apocalyptic film.

For the most part, some of Atlanta’s busiest streets, including Peachtree Street, have been empty. The few motorists crazy to drive the roads — guilty as charged — travel no faster than 25 mph or so, and follow dry trails made by the tires of other cars.

What’s even more surreal are the bundled-up pedestrians who often outnumber cars. Since most of the sidewalks are icier than the roads — it’s a helluva lot harder for city crews to shovel a sidewalk than it is to plow a street — these brave souls have decided to stomp along such usually hectic thoroughfares as Ponce de Leon and North avenues. (I know, someone call a news conference! Folks are walking!) It’s oddly captivating.
