At least 280,000 jobs — including 4,500 in Georgia — were sent overseas last year, according to Charlie Flemming, President of North Georgia Labor Council of the AFL-CIO. “We call on corporations to stop outsourcing American jobs and to put Americans back to work,” he said.
At the same time the press conference was taking place, the speakers noted, “The Strategic Outsourcing Conference” was just getting started at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead. For between $2,100 and $2,500 — not including hotel accommodations — corporate executives could attend workshops and seminars to learn about “Capitalizing on Opportunities in the New Global Landscape.” Some of the nation's largest corporations have attended previous conferences to learn more about outsourcing and the off-shoring industry.
According to the conference agenda, “the outsourcing/offshoring industry has survived the financial crisis and some of the participants have done very well indeed.” Workshops include lessons from HR and IT executives from such corporations as Tyco International, Deloitte Consulting and the Coca-Cola Company, among others. One seminar offers tips on how to prevent "organizational resistance to change." The two-day conference ends with the ominous-sounding closing panel discussion titled “Leave No Stone Unturned.” (Read the entire agenda here (PDF).
"[Outsourcing]'s not a Democratic issue or Republican issue," AFL-CIO Georgia President Richard Ray said. "It's an American issue."

First, they're not your jobs, they're the employers' jobs.
Second, compare outsourcing in Democrat dominated states with closed AFL-CIO shops to outsourcing in right-to-work states, like sweet merciful, bountiful, beautiful Georgia.
Third, if a guy says he'll print your t-shirts for ten bucks apiece and another guy says he'll print your t-shirts for a buck apiece, what are YOU going to do?
We need less government regulations and taxes to make it more attractive to keep workers in America.
Less Government = less taxes and more Liberty.
Rather than trying to legislate against losing jobs to other places, why not spend the effort on crafting a plan to attract jobs? Why can't the Democrats in Georgia develop a plan that will help their own supporters? Might that be why Democrats are on the endangered species list in Georgia?
Typical Republicans always talking about American pride and values, but not afraid to profit by hurting real Americans, by outsourcing the work to other countries. Not only do you want to take opportunities from Americans who are struggling to find jobs, mostly because of outsourcing like this, the product is crap. So for all of the comments above, I am so glad you are so supportive of countries like India, Pakistan, and other countries that are not the U.S.A.
Reply to Oydave: If employers keep outsourcing jobs, there won't be any "employers" eventually -- using your logic. YOUR job won't be here either.
If you keep accommodating that scenario- most American families will be wearing $1.00 tee shirts and living in poverty. At that point, let's start growing banana trees because we're then headed to banana republic status. Good bye middle class and ultimately democracy.
This country has led the world in standard of living and productivity for decades.
Why lose it now because of corporate agendas?
Union membership rates are much higher in many foreign industrialized nations- they are finding solutions without destroying their middle class.
Sorry, dude, unions and high taxes imposed by Democrats are two of the main reasons this is happening. Which is why it's ironic they hold this super serious, hand wringing presser. You want jobs and economic activity? Make it attractive to do business here instead of treating business as the enemy as do the Dems and the unions.
Unions have a noble history, but that day was over decades ago.
Germany has strog unions, tough business regulation and enviromental stadards. They export more than they import and survived the economic melt down, especially there working families, in much better shape than the US
Union Dude - Toyota, Honda and Nissan have been building cars in the United States for 25 yrs. Germany’s BMW and Mercedes Benz have added factories here. Kia and Hyundai opened U.S. plants. VW is ramping up a state-of-the-art factory in Tennessee. All these carmakers are unionized in their home countries, but none of their American workers are organized.
The UAW has mounted union drives several times, but never succeeded.
So what does our corrupt self serving in debt to no ends UAW do? Get the Big Gov't behind him. Say that the National Labor Relations Act doesn’t effectively protect the right of workers to choose whether to join a union. Get Gov't behind you and state that the right to organize a union is a “fundamental human right” and that secret-ballot elections should be conducted fairly, without disparaging remarks by either side, and that if workers do choose a union, they are entitled to speedy collective bargaining.
Companies that don’t agree to sign the principles will be publicly branded “human rights violators,” The UAW says.
Yeah Whatever - I think we saw enough peaceful Union protests on the front lawns of bank workers and around town halls last summer - Unions don't do anything peacefully.
This is how left leaning groups attack you - If you deny the charge, you somehow give it credibility. If you ignore the charge silence is interpreted as admission of guilt. Blood libel involves two things: First, an imaginary crime; second, the accusation that an entire group of people is guilty of committing that crime that never occurred.
Carry on Left Leaners America is onto you.
"At least 280,000 jobs — including 4,500 in Georgia — were sent overseas last year, according to Charlie Flemming"
My problem with this statement is by just focusing on the jobs actually transferred they are ignoring the bigger amount of jobs missing instead of being created here they have been created in other countries.
This is the problem of Un-Fair Free Trade. Free Trade on paper and from a pure economic point of view is the only way to go. The problem is Free Trade when we aren't playing on a level playing field can be destructive.
Yes higher taxes and wages can create an un-even playing field but as pointed out with the Germany example we don't have the highest taxes.
The bigger problem is do we really want to race to poverty level pay scales that other countries have (China, Korea, India). And how do we factor in the greater amount of government dollars we spend on protecting the world and our interests? We have huge amounts of troops stationed in Korea and Japan, pumping our tax dollars into their economy and saving them from military expenditures, so that they can focus on selling their cars in our country. On top of that they don't provide equal access to their markets that we provide to theirs.
Its the "Un-Fair" Free Trade, not immigrants, not unions, not taxes that's most to blame for the loss of jobs and reductions in wages.
But many of our leaders, pundents and elite and the mindless parrots who get their thoughts from Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity and their derivative blogging followers hide the ball and make people think its the big old nasty unions or immigrants that are causing the problem - its easier to recognize those nasty stereotypes - they certainly don't want you to recognize whose making money off this no matter where the jobs are or go.
The reason the t-shirt is $1.00 vs $10.00 is because $3 is from human rights and $5.50 is from Gov't control of money, resources and produciton. The person selling that shirt for $1.00 is still living in poverty. So much for making a buck.
Germany benefits from the Euro big time. Their manuplation of the other EU nations for theri benefit of manufacturing is much closer to China than many will admit. Hence the reason they are the loudest EU voice against US currency policy.
If the reason that offshore labor was cheaper because of better efficiencies, quality, etc. than I would support it (because than American firms would be driven to compete for the jobs). However, because the playing field isn't anywhere near level, the US and GA will not beable to do anything.
Left leaners and right leaners have different opinions - so what?
Listen up though - if you’re on the side that wants to shut people up and their opinions you’re on the wrong side. That’s not a side people should be on. I think that what goes on with right leaners is that every time we try to hold a debate about the new 2,200 page health care law, we’re called racists. If we have differences over gay marriage we’re homophobic. If we support Arizona’s law (AKA Americas Immigration Policies), we’re xenophobic. If we oppose the Ground Zero Mosque we’re Islamophobic. We’re told that we don’t have policy differences but we’re mentally ill all the time (see any EDGE response to me).
The rightleaners in this country want to hold the debates. Left leaners just try to shut us up.
PP: Why if you want to improved health care laws are you called a Socialist? Why if you want better control of banks and investment companies are you called a Marxist? Why if you want to invest in infrastructure are you accused of bankrupting the country? And if are concerned about polluting the Gulf of Mexico why are you accused of strangling the defenseless oil companies? And aren't tons of vitriol attached to the accusations? Can you help me understand what point you are trying to make in your last comment?
Pete my responses to you have very little to do with your actual policies. I enjoy reading Oy Dave's opinion because he is obviously bright. You come off as an ignorant zealot. You never see any sort of gray area and have the reading comprehension level of a 3 year old. Oy Dave is the rare right winger i can tolerate. People get upset with you more for your inability to use any sort of critical thinking much more than your actual politics.
PS
Your politics are dumb as fuck too.
What's funny I don't think Edgewood or anyone has used the "labels" that upset PP so much - PP sorry but its too easy to pick on your posts without having to do that.
Though PP I will give you some credit compared to the average AJC poster you look smarter than President Obama.
But I tried to explain the problems you have in a post on the Red Dog thread.
Though your playing of the victim card for the certain right wing arguments is straight out of the Sarah ("if the left didn't have double standards they would have no standards and they don't care about issue that will bring America to her knees") Palin I A VICTIM book.
you should watch Stewarts video I think even you will laugh. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-janu…
Jon Stewart's joke about Palin also reminds me of your blog regurgitated post about the left trying to stop debate. "You have become a lighting rod less for your clarity of vision, but more for your ability to turn any criticism of you of into persecution of you."
As does this joke by him ""There must to be a word for complaining vociferously about a wrong being done to you whilst casually committing said wrong without even realizing it," Stewart said. "For now let's call it an 'Anchorage Steamer.'"
I mean its almost as if you just mirror the words of Palin, Hannity and Glenn Beck without even trying to understand the arguments being made.
QM - I want Health care reform as well, the new law has a few (3) good things in it - why was it 2,200 pages? The way it was passed was infuriating. This bill was over reaching at best and waivers are given out to too many Unions that wanted this monstrosity. The CBO scoring of the bill was miss leading. In 10 Years how does this get paid for? It is too much control and creates too much Government and more regulations we can't afford. Republicans and the American people were not even invited in on the creation of this bill. It was written in Secrecy forcing Americans to buy Health Insurance. That is Socialistic.
Finance reform did nothing to Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac this was a purposeful omission. And Putting caps on what people can earn because they have made enough in some persons opinion is Socialistic.
The BP issue was a calamity of no Government inspections that were in place since the Exxon disaster in Alaska on the rig itself. But the clean up was the real disaster. We ruined a part of our country and nation for a Summer and hurt us further economically due to inaction of our Government and their failure to accept worldwide help that led to the complete closure of an Industry in the Gulf - that is Socialistic some could argue. On BP we could have done so much more to clean it up faster and now we let the world (and pay the world) to drill in the offshore waters we forbid ourselves to drill into. We want to be energy independant - how does this help reach that goal?
Edge - I am no zealot I am just a regular old guy who happens to be conservative who respects people and would never call you a name or disrepsect your opinions no matter what you said or did. Trust me on this. And call me out on it - if I say something that you think is fanatical just say so. And forgive my miss types, miss spellings and at times failure to critically read at times - I am over here busting my ass and just taking a break to write this stuff out on my favorite and only posting site.
InAtl - the Joke you quote dealing with duplicity can be said of all of us. If you can't find any in yourself your not looking hard enough or maybe you need to ask a freind of your own personal double standards.
I am a right leaner a conservative etc...that does not mean we disagree on every issue. I have never called any one of you a name nor have I said cuss words about your beliefs, statements, etc...I think the worst I ever said was I completely disagree and heres why. Which is a lot more than I get from many others here.
Peace friends!
Here is yet another reason why America, 85%, do not want, care, or believe in the good of Unions. Why do they (unions) believe they are entitled to something that no one else can have or even want but forced on them? Explain!
