Lawmaker proposes changes to ye olde bicycle code

You'll recall that state Rep. Doug McKillip last year switched from being a Democrat to a Republican, — in part, the Athens lawmaker says, because the "D" behind his name made it difficult to pass legislation allowing people to ride bicycles on sidewalks.

Well, now that McKillip's a member of the majority party, he's giving those pieces of legislation another try. In fact, he's introduced two bills about bicycles — one of which appears to update several parts of the state code dealing with two wheelers. (View the bill here. The current code is here. McKillip's other cycling-related bill is here. )

Among the proposed fixes in McKillip's bill: Requiring red rear blinkers lights during nighttime riding; eliminating the provision that requires new bikes to come equipped with red reflectors on the pedals; and adding the words "bicycle lane" to the code. Most of the other suggestions are attempts to clean up language. We've surely glossed over other changes, so let us know what you find.

Considering McKillip's past efforts to pass similar legislation, how much you wanna bet House leadership volleys the bill from committee to committee until crossover day just to make his life a living hell?

Oh yes, and this is an open thread.
