Morning Newsdome: U.S. sizing up ElBaradei in light of "March of Millions" in Egypt

Posted By on Tue, Feb 1, 2011 at 11:02 AM

>> The "March of Millions" gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square today, as well as huge demonstrations throughout Egypt, to call for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. Though 125 people have died in the demonstrations to date, the army is now supporting the protesters and chanting "we are with you." Meanwhile, the White House has decided that their ally Mubarak has lost legitimacy and are now sizing up Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei, who had a contentious relationship with the Bush administration but voted to give Obama the peace prize. But who didn't have a contentious relationship with Bush? (Al Jazeera, the New York Times)

>> Perhaps frightened by the revolutions going on throughout the Middle East, King Abdullah II of Jordan, a staunch U.S. ally, announced today that he's replacing the current prime minister with Marouf Bakhit to "launch true political reforms, enhance Jordan's democratic drive and ensure safe and decent living for all Jordanians," a country with 30 percent unemployment. Wow, do it Marouf! Except, Bakhit has been prime minister before and mainly just talks the talk. (AFP)

>> Florida judge Roger Vinson struck down the federal health care law as unconstitutional in a suit brought by 26 states. Why is it the unhealthiest states are the ones causing the ruckus? (the New York Times)

>> The Shinmoedake volcano in Japan erupted again today "five times" more powerful than last week. The force even blew out windows five miles away. I would recommend not living by volcanoes. (AP)

>> And finally: George W. Bush's daughter Barbara released a video for the Human Rights Campaign's "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality" in favor of gay marriage. This puts her at odds with her father and grandfather, who were vehemently opposed to gay marriage, but her mother Laura also hinted support for gay rights. Like ElBaradei, Barbara has a contentious relationship with Bush. (the New York Times)
