Dance Truck pulls into the Contemporary

While setting up for various shows around town, union lighting technician Malina Rodriguez started to notice the evocative eeriness of the back of an emptied-out equipment truck. Narrow, spooky, and dramatic, that space carries the equipment for a show, but could it not also become its own space for staging a show? Enter local arts mavens Stuart Keeler and Cathy Byrd who were looking for performers and artists for their arts event Le Flash. Rodriguez, while not a dancer herself, wanted to be sure that dance was an integral part of the event, but the producers were having trouble providing a venue because space was rapidly filling up. “Nevermind,” Rodriguez said. “I'll bring the venue.” Thus Dance Truck was born. The Rodriguez-curated dance performances on a truck were a hit at the Le Flash event, and Dance Truck has continued hauling its unique staging experience to various outdoor venues and festivals in Atlanta ever since.

Those who haven't seen Dance Truck yet won't want to miss the opportunity to catch it at its current stop: The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center this Friday evening. Dancer Corian Ellisor of CORE will preview his first full-length piece WikiDance, Onur Topal-Sumer of Full Radius and Lori Teague of Emory Dance will likewise showcase solo work, while performance art duo Andy Imm and Edie Gonzalez, also known as DE, will premiere a movement-based piece. The event also includes poetry from Free Poems on Demand and celeb-donated bake sale treats (CL's own Wyatt Williams has promised some tasty baked goods, and I'm baking up a batch of my soon-to-be-famous Kahlua and Cocoa Nib Brownies. Full disclosure: They rule).

Dance Truck at the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center this Friday, February 11, at 7 pm. Admission is free. The Contemporary is located at 535 Means Street NW in the Westside Arts District. The event also includes Free Poems on Demand, a fund-raising bake sale, and the opportunity to see the Contemporary's current exhibit.
