Dance Truck pulls into the Contemporary

While setting up for various shows around town, union lighting technician Malina Rodriguez started to notice the evocative eeriness of the back of an emptied-out equipment truck. Narrow, spooky, and dramatic, that space carries the equipment for a show, but could it not also become its own space for staging a show? Enter local arts mavens Stuart Keeler and Cathy Byrd who were looking for performers and artists for their arts event Le Flash. Rodriguez, while not a dancer herself, wanted to be sure that dance was an integral part of the event, but the producers were having trouble providing a venue because space was rapidly filling up. “Nevermind,” Rodriguez said. “I’ll bring the venue.” Thus Dance Truck was born. The Rodriguez-curated dance performances on a truck were a hit at the Le Flash event, and Dance Truck has continued hauling its unique staging experience to various outdoor venues and festivals in Atlanta ever since.
