It looks like the High and scrappy local arts non-profit Wonderroot are becoming interesting bedfellows. Fresh off their collaboration for the closing night of the Dalí exhibition, the groups announced today that they’re working together to put on WonderRoot’s General Local, Mostly Independent Film Series: Best of Year One. The event will bring together the best work from the Plaza screenings that Wonderroot has been putting on since the summer of last year.
Rather than simply a Wonderroot event at the High’s venue, the event will be collaboratively curated by Virginia Shearer, Michael Rooks and Patricia Rodewald of the High Museum and Kristy Breneman of WonderRoot. The selected artists will be announced on March 11. In the press release, Appleton and Shearer sound legitimately excited about working together:
“At WonderRoot, we are thrilled to work with the High Museum again. The effort to work across the spectrum of Atlanta’s arts ecology is evidence that Atlanta’s cultural community is in a great place — and we’re doing this in support of local filmmakers,” says WonderRoot’s Chris Appleton. “WonderRoot is committed to providing a platform for Atlanta-based artists, and this is another effort to raise the visibility opportunities for the artists we serve.”
“On behalf of my colleagues at the High, I’d like to say how much we are looking forward to hosting this special showcase of films drawn from WonderRoot’s local filmmaker series. The High’s media arts department produces acclaimed annual film series and festivals of foreign, independent and classic cinema throughout the year. Partnering with WonderRoot is a wonderful way to share what we have to offer with new audiences and an incredible opportunity to share cutting-edge film made right here in Atlanta with our established film audience,” says the High Museum’s Virginia Shearer.
WonderRoot’s General Local, Mostly Independent Film Series: Best of Year One will screen at the High Museum of Art, Rich Theatre at 8pm on Saturday, March 19. More details at the High.
