High school and college students protested changes to the HOPE Scholarship program being proposed by Governor Nathan Deal during a candlelight vigil on March 7. Proposed changes require high school students earn a 3.7 GPA and 1200+ SAT score if they want a full 100% tuition coverage for in-state schools. Students not meeting that requirement would get less reimbursement. The student protesters believe the new requirements are too difficult, especially for students living in poor areas who need the help the most. Speakers at the vigil suggested remedies come from tax revenue and cuts to other areas.

I love the irony here! Teabaggers would no doubt jump at the chance to practice austerity against something they don't care about (higher education). We all know teabaggers don't truck with book larnin'.
But if this comes to pass, a higher proportion of the student body of Georgia's subsidized schools would be composed of international immigrants, yankees, and other non-Georgian foreign nationals.
Torn between irrational xenophobia and self-destructive hatred of the government, which will teahadists choose? Smashing your fingers with a hammer is probably the least depressing option.
HOPE was a great program when first started and evloved into something the state can't afford anymore....
if you take in $1 from lottery but spend $2 to fund the program, of course it will not last and changes need to be made to make the $1 equal $1 in spending....
stupid liberals can't seem to figure out simple math....
"stupid liberals can't seem to figure out simple math...."
At least we 'evloved' our spelling though.
Didn't the lottery pay record compensation to its executives recently?
Also do they really need to spend so much money on advertising? What is it half the budget goes to "administration" and half to fund hope?
Seems every other commercial on TV and Radio is some stupidly produced commercial for the Lottery. Those damn ducks on the plan? the snowman hit by a truck...geez is that really necessary? I'm not opposed to the lottery but I am opposed to the government hyping gambling non stop.
The Tea Party movement doesn't care about higher education.
Also they're ugly and their Moms dress them funny.
As for the students, someday they will understand the route their free money took on the way to them. As for the lottery administration, Tea Bag it, i.e. cut the fat, clean house, and get it back on track with it's original purpose.
3.7 GPA and 1200+ SAT score for a full ride does not sound bad. How are children in poor areas affected by these standards?

Oh, if only you were intelligent enough to see the irony here...
"But if this comes to pass, a higher proportion of the student body of Georgia's subsidized schools would be composed of international immigrants, yankees, and other non-Georgian foreign nationals."
So basically they would be people who don't have inflated GPAs from Georgia high schools, really value a college education, and probably deserve scholarships on merit?
Somebody please tell me how getting 90% of your tuition payed-for is a bad thing? How greater can the entitlement mentality get? Suck it up, bitches. Life isn't fair. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
As for the income cap, aren't "we endowed by the Creator that all men are equal"? Our laws & benefits should apply to everyone equally, no matter how much money they have (or not).
I'm sure the usual loonies will foam at the mouth & post replies. Have fun...
"So basically they would be people who don't have inflated GPAs from Georgia high schools, really value a college education, and probably deserve scholarships on merit? "
It doesn't surprise me that you missed my exceedingly simple point.
It is funny that Georgia's schools, which are subsidized with tax money, will have a lower proportion of Georgia residents attending if HOPE is cut. That is all.
"Somebody please tell me how getting 90% of your tuition payed-for is a bad thing? How greater can the entitlement mentality get? "
You seem to have issues with understanding complex problems.
It is not a bad thing to have a majority of your tuition covered by the state. Nobody is saying that. You are saying other people are saying that, but you are wrong.
The problem is that the state is placing educational hurdles on HOPE benefits... why? HOPE is a successful program that provides educational benefits to low-income students. It is likely that these new 'educational' standards will benefit wealthier students who have the resources to pay for test prep, have stable and supportive home environments, don't miss the lost income effect of attending school, etc.
If the state GOP wanted to help with educational inequality, they would means-test hope. But they are simply shifting more of the subsidy to the wealthier students. That is probably not a good idea.
"As for the income cap, aren't "we endowed by the Creator that all men are equal"? Our laws & benefits should apply to everyone equally, no matter how much money they have (or not). "
Nope. You don't understand what a subsidy is. You also seem to be laboring under the misguided notion that this is a meritocracy. Please take a good hard look at reality and tell us how your views do not conform to what society actually looks like.
"I'm sure the usual loonies will foam at the mouth & post replies."
'I'm going to pre-emptively discount anything you say because I'm not smart enough to argue against it' is basically what you're saying here. Grow a pair or be silent.
