Bobby Franklin rebuffs gay activists

Posted By on Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 12:08 PM

In news that isn't terribly shocking, State Rep. Bobby Franklin — who recently pissed off LGBT community by comparing gays to "unrepentant drug dealers" — ignored a request to meet with a handful of gay activists at the capitol yesterday.

Members of the Queer Justice League and GetEQUAL GA — some of whom are residents of Franklin's district — met on the capitol steps, then proceeded inside where a page delivered their request to meet with Franklin and hand him a letter requesting that he apologize for his comments. The group waited 20 minutes, but Franklin never emerged. "We weren’t surprised," says QJL spokesman Art Izzard of Franklin's passive refusal to engage them. "We sort of anticipated that."

Franklin previously denied receiving QJL's letter — which asked that he formally apologize to the gay community and that he undergo sensitivity training — and told the Marietta Daily Journal, "I have not seen any such remarks [from The Queer Justice League] and will not waste my time reading them." If he hadn't previously received the letter, he has now: after leaving the capitol, the activists went across the street to Franklin's office and made sure it was placed on his desk.

"At least now we know for a fact he’s seen it," says Izzard. "We’d like to engage with him and have a meeting, but the ball is in his court."
