But whether true, real or fictional, McClanahan makes for a great storyteller with his conversational narrative style, which lends a personal touch in his tales of growing up in West Virginia, where his first two books, Stories I and Stories 2 (Six Gallery Press) are set.
When he reads before an audience, McClanahan is easy to follow thanks to his use of language and delivery. Void of theatrics, the author speaks the way you might expect him to talk to you at a bar over drinks and smokes, delivering elements of humor and sadness with ease.
You can catch McClanahan read this Sat., Mar. 19, at Beep Beep Gallery as part of the Solar Anus reading series, alongside Creative Loafing arts writer and Joyland South editor, Wyatt Williams, who will read one of his own short stories.
