AirTran is number one!

Posted By on Mon, Apr 4, 2011 at 2:22 PM

There's good news and bad news today regarding Atlanta's hometown airlines.

According to a study of major airlines in terms of on-time arrivals, bumps because of overbooking, customer complaints and mishandled baggage data, AirTran Airways came out on top. Hawaiian Airlines, the defending champ, was knocked down to second place. The study says that overall, the airlines surveyed lost fewer bags, bumped fewer passengers and had more on-time arrivals, but paradoxically, consumer complaints increased, presumably because flights are more crowded on average than they were a few years ago.

(Is it appropriate here to mention that Southwest is in the process of buying AirTran or that a nightmare scenario happened on a Southwest plane over the weekend?)

And now the bad news: Delta racked up the highest number of complaints per 100,000 customers — by a goodly margin. If the issue was flight delays, perhaps there was a good reason Delta dropped its slogan: "Ready when you are."
