Farley Granger Remembered

- Granger Than Fiction: Rope’s Leopold & Loeb subtext
Whereas the death of Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor made front page headlines and magazine covers, the passing of Farley Granger, a leading man whose career never ascended to the heights of Taylor, received brief obits, most of which reduced the star to his role in two films by Hitchcock, Strangers on a Train and Rope.
Perhaps it is the fact that we share the same birthday (July 1).
Or maybe it is my obsession with Rope, one of the first films I deconstructed in my formative years as an aspiring cineaste.
Either way, I have always carried a special fondness for Granger.
As an undergrad, when I fulfilled my work/study obligations as a 16mm projectionist for the film department at Bard College, I watched dozens of films each month.
