Morning Newsdome: Boehner and Reid meet with Obama over looming government shutdown

Posted by Bobby Feingold on Thu, Apr 7, 2011 at 10:50 AM

House Speaker John Boehner
>> House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid met with President Obama late last night to work out a spending agreement, though still no deal has been struck. Without some agreement to allocate $33 billion to $40 billion in cuts, the government will shut down Friday at midnight. I can't keep living paycheck to paycheck like this! (Wall Street Journal)

>> Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, 23, opened fire at a public elementary school in Rio de Janeiro today, killing at least 12 before taking his own life. Twenty-two people are in critical condition, and the gunman was a former student at the school. Hopefully Michael Moore will get to the bottom of this tragedy. (MSNBC)

>> What is wrong with you people? A national NBC/Wall Street Journal poll of Republican primary voters reveals Donald Trump is in second place, four points behind Mitt Romney. I guess being rich is a major Republican asset. (MSNBC)

>> Whack-job Glenn Beck will "transition off" his Fox News television show, the third highest rated in cable news. Everyone is happy about this. (Business Insider, AP)

>> And finally: Asteroids GW9 (20 feet by 46 feet) and GP28 (12 feet by 26) flew past Earth yesterday at distances closer than the moon. Thankfully everything's okay, besides the tsunami and earthquake in Japan, unrest in the Middle East and now a 6.5 earthquake in southern Mexico. (Wired, LA Times)

I can't believe what great big pussies Obama and the Senate are being about this budget. The GOP only controls the House. Tell them to shove it.

We really don't need a plan with $1.3T in budget cuts and $1.2T in tax cuts for the rich.

why can't you believe it? This is the actually last years budget when the GOP had control of none of the houses?

Newsflash for smitty. No one is talking about 1.3 trillion in cuts. They are talking about 61 billion. Small number when you consider we are over 14 trillion in debt and counting. Mabey Obama didnt get the message last election, but people want the government to cut spending. Oh and by the way brainiac, that class envy shit dont fly anymore. You being jealous of rich people dose not constitute economic policy.

Shut it down and let's save some cash for a while. I think it is the best thing for the American people.

Is this the same congress who did not even do a budget this last time around. They are like drunken sailors, like college students wanting dad to always up his limit on the credit card...

Shut it down for how about a month or 2?

King Obama is about to have raised $1B for his 2012 campaign most of the dollars are from unions. At least Trump pays his taxes and earns his money. Go Trump! But I am leery of him he sounds too good to be true. But I will keep faith in the man until I know he is a plant of some sort.

Wish I could have watched Beck more that time slot of 5PM did not work well with my schedule.

However I am super glad that my kids economics teacher plays Beck and Daid Barton often to the class! Now there is something I can be proud of because I am a right leaner who beleives in the constitution and the principles written long ago that keeps our nation strong!

Suck it commies!

I hope this doesn't mean that John Stewart's Beck impression is going to be retired.

I hope Trump stays in a while. Great comic relief.

"Wish I could have watched Beck more that time slot of 5PM did not work well with my schedule."

what, you got outvoted for control of the nursing home big screen? score another win for democracy

"I hope Trump stays in a while. Great comic relief."

for real. he's murdering the current super-preliminary republican candidates in the pols. is he talking about the issues? no, he's talking about how that negroid muslim obama can't possibly be a real american. trump would harp on bush directing 9/11 if it sold to the inbred teabagger demographic

hey repubs, how does it feel that your current leading candidate for office is a washed up reality star who gained everything in life from his father? trump's political views are about as sincere as his scalp-rug and it's so hilarious watching his approval rating rise as he tells the people exactly what they want to hear

union members: not taxpayers, don't earn money

at the top of the long, long list of everything pete irrationally hates i think 'americans' comes in at the top. pete's anger is so easily directed towards the current scapegoat du jour, probably because pete is extremely stupid

"He's not the leading candidate. Romney is."

by some pols, others have trump leading.

romney is also washing his hands of romneycare, which was a partial model for obamacare. he even changed significant portions of the language in the second edition of his most recent book to reflect his political flip-flop.

"Eric - you are just an admitted commie, whats not to love about you and communism? Go to Cuba please."

you'll have to try a lot harder than that, pete. i mean don't try too hard, i don't want you to stroke out or anything because taxpayers would have to foot the bill. keep your blood pressure down but also try to insult me in a manner that makes sense, i'd like to get a little rhetorical challenge out of you every once in a while. right now it's like arguing with a parrot who watches nothing but fox news

Does pistolpete really have a kid or did he copy and paste that.

Trump isn't really running for President he's doing it and raising the Birther bit because it increases ratings for his apprentice show, Trump the man who has lost more money for more people than any other American is doing it for purely self profit reasons - hell with the health of political discourse or good governance: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/03/business…

@Reality the reality is that we are playing with crumbs. The biggest contributor was the unfunded tax cuts. http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&…

"Trump isn't really running for President he's doing it and raising the Birther bit because it increases ratings for his apprentice show"

you know that, and i know that, but the fact that an insincere reality tv hack is owning all the other candidates is illuminating

republicans finally have to face the reality of their abusive social-fiscal conservative relationship. thus the teabaggers, otherwise known as the most useless americans. that an entertainer-landlord can swoop in and eat the professional politician's lunches simply shows how intellectually bankrupt the republicans have become

Yet the main stream politicians are merely responding to that portion of the Republican voting base - which are Americans and for whom I fear PistolPete is a perfect proxy.

My biggest fear for this country is that the non stop message from the Beck's Limbaugh's and Hannity's of the world is finally diverting and brain washing a growing number of Americans.

How else do we explain even Huckabee embracing David Barton and praising Jon Voight's wisdom? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=253PiA7zIl4… Seems like the Republican party is merely chasing a growing element of the American People - and while Trump will be a speed bump they won't see it as that - and won't there influence merely continue to grow?

Spoken like a true commie alinsky style Eric the Red! I just have to point out that you are a commie - that is enough. You and InAtl are pro amnesty, pro big government, pro health care law rammed down our throats, pro choice and anti constitution/capitalism.

I said what you say above about Trump but I love the nest being stirred! Imagine an illegitimate president on the backs of left leaners and MSM! It is a great story! What more could prove than many on the left are simply anti american!

It is ok - the right is slowly turning this big boat around and trimming up it's size a bit. You are both welcome to a life raft at anytime heading to cuba.

you have to constantly assert i'm a commie, whatever that means. i don't even have to point out that you're insane and stupid, it's fairly evident

"My biggest fear for this country is that the non stop message from the Beck's Limbaugh's and Hannity's of the world is finally diverting and brain washing a growing number of Americans. "

this has always been the case. the dirty secret of democracy is that a significant portion of the electorate is simply incapable of casting an informed vote, which leaves them vulnerable to the predations of people who are much smarter and much less ethical.

if anything, the primary failure of the democrats is that they are as yet unwilling to play dirty and engage in direct reality manipulation to render the toothless classes enthralled

report
Posted by eric pfeifer on 04/07/2011 at 7:25 PM

Eric - you have lost it my man. Dems play plenty dirty. AKA the nuclear option with health care, what more dirty games do you want the Dems to play? Race card check, own the media check, play class warfare check, and there are more.

I mean, you believe in Communism you want more communism, you once said "whats wrong with communism".

These ideas are more hateful and more anti american than anything I could even dream of.

report
Posted by PistolPete on 04/07/2011 at 7:42 PM

ha! That's certainly the kettle calling the pot black.

Eric, I'm not certain if the Dems played it better they could even compete. I mean they made some headway on Palin and perhaps oversimplified her because she made it so easy.

But hating Big Government and hating people who don't look like you is so much easier to sell because its easier for people to latch on to. They should be able to play the card that the income gap between the top 2% is larger than at anytime since just before the Depression but I suppose they've got the conflict that in the end the Dems are beholden to that 2% - just a little less, plus the lottery mentality of many Americans that they can get there.

But as Maddow may prove those ratings aren't there for that talk.

Maybe what's changed is the integrity of the media, particularly the so called 4th estate (news pete)
