Shake at the Lake cancelled - for Spring

Bad news, everyone! Georgia Shakespeare has once again been forced to postpone its popular outdoor production Shake at the Lake for May of 2011. Shake at the Lake had been an annual event at Piedmont Park's Lake Clara Meer since 2004, but was canceled in 2009, and again this year, due to insufficient funds.

Good news, everyone! Georgia Shakespeare's currently hustling to stage a postponed version of Shake at the Lake this fall. According to the press release:

“It has become clear over the last month that we will not be able to secure the full funding needed” for a spring presentation, Georgia Shakespeare producing artistic director Richard Garner said in a statement. “While we are saddened that the event will not happen in this time slot, we are working with Piedmont Park Conservatory to find an alternative date for the fall. Staff is actively working with our Board of Trustees to seek the additional funding needed to present a show in August or September" The troupe has $50,000 pledged by two entities toward the $125,000 needed to present the free productions.

Still on Georgia Shakespeare's agenda is Shakespeare's birthday party on April 23 and its 2011 summer repertory season opening June 8: The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra, Michael Frayn's farce Noises Off and a musical adaptation of The Jungle Book as part of its Family Classics Series. This Fall the company will stage The Glass Menagerie from Oct. 6-30.
