Screen on the Green is back—this year, for the first time ever, without Turner, TCM or Peachtree TV sponsorship.
Presented by the folks at
Piedmont Park Conservancy themselves, with sponsorship from Delta, this year's SCREEN ON THE GREEN will run for five Thursday evenings in June: the 2nd thru the 30th, with a line-up of decidedly classic films.
There will also be a Viewer's Choice film on June 23—choosing between Hitchcock's The Birds, 1963 vs. Frankenstein, 1931.
Viewing schedule for the 2011 SCREEN ON THE GREEN season:
June 2 - The Lion King, 1994
June 9 - Imitation of Life, 1959
June 16 - Sixteen Candles, 1984
June 23 - Viewers Choice — The Birds, 1963 vs. Frankenstein, 1931
June 30 - Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, 1971
From the site:
Moviegoers are welcome to bring picnic baskets, food and snacks but no glass containers can be brought into Piedmont Park. In consideration of others, SCREEN ON THE GREEN attendees are asked to leave pets at home. Umbrellas, high-backed chairs and grills are strictly prohibited.
ADDENDUM: I received a request from the Conservancy to add the following text to this article:
"Screen on the Green will proceed as planned, based on necessary
funding. If your company is interested in becoming a sponsor for
Screen on the Green, please contact Monica Thornton at

After last year's melee, we are a little surprised there's nothing here about weapons.
Meanwhile over at Atlantic Station, beginning on May 12, Movies in the Park, a series of outdoor films, also on Thursday evenings throughout the summer, kicks off with Iron Man 2. The fun of this series is the property's ability to partner with surrounding restaurants with "Movie Meal Deals" and other special offers.
Interestingly, the Atlantic Station line-up also includes a viewer's choice—in this case, an open ended choice. It'll be interesting to see what wins.
Perhaps we can spearhead an Ishtar campaign?
